Pete Greig is the bewildered founder of the 24-7 Prayer movement in more than
100 countries. He is also the Senior Pastor of Emmaus Rd church, the leader of
Waverley Abbey, and an award-winning author of 8 books available in many
languages.
To accompany his writing, Pete’s free, online resources include The Prayer
Course - downloaded more than three million times, and Lectio365 - a daily
devotional with 270,000 regular users.
He and his wife Sammy are proud parents to two adult sons and members of The
Order of the Mustard Seed (OMS). They split their time between a barge on the

You or someone you know is struggling for no apparent reason, so you appeal to
God for help. Yet, he doesn't seem to be there listening. The agony continues,
and you start to doubt his existence--overtly or quietly. This is a situation
common among Christians. But when we bring it up, we tend to latch onto vague
answers like, "God's will is mysterious." Let's face it: that's of no help
during troubling times. This book provides a more in-depth, compelling look at
the topic.
The book is deeply personal, reflecting Pete Greig's own experience with
unanswered prayer, while at the same time deeply rooted in the Bible and various
theological works. It is both heartfelt and well-researched. By sharing his own
experiences, the author really made me feel like he could understand my doubts.
He always came off as sympathetic, never condescending. And he includes some
nice pinches of humor to lighten things up at times.
Ultimately, the author argues that we need a faith that endures even without the
blessings we're asking for. We cannot, according to Greig, decide not to believe
in God just because we don't receive the miracle we want. It's a difficult fact
to come to terms with, but he defends this point well.
The work is very blunt in its exploration of why some prayers are left
unanswered. For instance, when the author delves into a discussion on demons, he
straight-up admits that we often try to write off their existence today.
However, he argues persuasively that free will among supernatural beings can be
important to understanding unanswered prayer. So the author is not afraid to
look into touchy subjects, not afraid to articulate things we might be thinking
but don't want to say aloud.
There are, of course, many other reasons why prayer is sometimes unanswered: the
author lists sixteen different possibilities in the book's appendix (which you
might want to peek at first so you know what to expect). He wants the reader to
recognize that we live in a fallen world, one where people have free will, and
we need to look at our situations deeply if we're to understand them.
The back of the book contains a guide for group discussion. Even if you're
reading this book alone, I strongly encourage you to do the exercises found
there and to ponder the questions asked. They helped me out personally, so I
believe they could help you as well. Also, if a particular chapter seems to
really touch you, I'd recommend writing out your feelings. Don't rush through
this book: absorb its message.
This work will not rid you of all your doubts, but it will help you to frame
your understanding, help you on your spiritual journey. I'm surprised more
people haven't read this book.
Greig provides a comprehensive look at unanswered prayer. I could recommend his
work to any Christian who struggles with prayer--any denomination. And I could
recommend it even to Christians who have never dealt personally with unanswered
prayer, as it gives you a means by which to comfort those who are struggling,
and you yourself will be better equipped if your prayer life ever seems futile.
Also, I could recommend it to anyone who doubts Christianity on the basis of
having a prayer left unanswered. (However, this is not a comprehensive
apologetic work on Christianity as a whole like Mere Christianity or The Case
for Faith.) It won't tie up all the loose ends in your prayer life, but it can
give you a better understanding of prayer and, ultimately, of God.

I highly recommend the audiobook, to hear from the author himself describe his
experiences and stories he's heard from others. It is NOT a feel-good book with
neat answers, but it is also NOT a leave-you-in-your-suffering-no-answers book
either. Most everything is very Biblically grounded. In my opinion, it is much
more practically helpful for someone suffering than CS Lewis' Problem of Pain.
The only small thing I want to say about it though, is - at least from what he
shared, I could be wrong - I think the author is missing a huge part of what
gives us strength and signs of God's presence through the worst seasons of life:
the local church. He mentions it here and there, but at various points as he
recounts his or others' stories I couldn't help but wonder things like, "Was no
one in your church willing to watch your kids while you went to the hospital? Or
maybe you didn't feel comfortable enough to ask anyone? Was the strongest
encouragement you received from the body of Christ really a letter from across
the country from people you never met?" Unfortunately, I know church at its best
for many people is a bi-weekly gathering rather than the Acts 2-type sacrificial
community God meant it to be. I pray the author and others reading this will one
day discover deeper strength and peace from a tight-knit church community
somehow.
But I don't want that to overshadow what is good about this book. Excellent and
really really helpful, I don't know of another book like it.

suffering and grief. Greig does not because God does not. As a father who
watched his 20 year old daughter struggle with a degenerative disease and then

Pete Greig is a very committed Christian, who founded a prayer movement called
24-7. 24-7 has been hugely influential, has spread across the globe and has
generated literally thousands upon thousands of amazing stories of answered
prayer. So when Pete's wife Samie has a terrifying fit, is diagnosed with a
massive brain tumour, has brain surgery and is left with epilepsy, Pete is
ideally placed to pray for her and see her illness healed and her epilepsy
disappear. Isn't he?
That isn't how things work out. Pete prays all right, and so do many others, but
the sickness remains. So here you have the leader of a global prayer movement,
who really knows the power of prayer and sees prayers answered all the time,
having to wrestle with the fact that his own prayers for something that
desperately, desperately matters to him aren't being answered at all. How can he
reconcile this with his faith?
The result is one of the best Christian books I've read in a long time, one of
those books that you keep buying extra copies of to give away. It is written
with honesty and integrity: not trying to sugar-coat the pain of what he and
Samie have been through, but wrestling with it and trying to understand it. Pete
has brought together a great many strands of theological thought, and has made
them accessible. This should be compulsory reading for every Christian.
