When the British invaded much of the world, it was fairly common for them to
expect their people to learn at least some words of at least one local language,
rather than just insist everyone speak English.

This is why so many posh British people spoke Urdu - because the East India
company insisted their employees speak it!

Many of the words they learned ended up being rolled back into Victorian
English.

Chop-chop is from the occupation of South China in the mid 19th century.
