He was widowed after a brief marriage. Blackfeet; he's half Indian.

There is a page with a picture of a Mrs. Frank Choate and her daughter,
Mary Choate.
May 4, 1921. There is also a letter stating that her husband has left
her and daughter, and gone to live with another woman. Also mentioned
is Frank's brother, George Choate. The notes say a Sam Choate is
mentioned, but I don't find it in the letter.

Mrs. Young Man Chief

Home on Whitecalf Coulee. One horse, no cattle, no chickens. Has acre of wheat,
no oats. Always has good garden. One crippled girl.

Picture was taken of Mrs. Young Man Chief and her daughter at their home.

Date of survey -------- April 28, 1921

This is a widow woman and has a very good allotment that has been well taken
care of. In addition to her very neat one room house, about eighteen by
twenty-four, she had a very good barn, also a very good cellar or root house. We
found in the cellar some very nice potatoes from last year's raising-a
sufficient number for seed and plenty for food until potatoes come again. There
was hay carried over from last year.

This woman has one child, a crippled girl about thirteen years of age. Dr. Yates
feels that nothing much can be done for this girl who was evidently afflicted
with infantile paralysis. The husband of this woman was evidently a very
progressive Indian. Mr. Sanderville, the farmer, informs me that he had cattle
during the time of his life and sufficient horses to carry on his farming
activities. His mowing machine and rake have been in use twenty years and are in
good condition. There was a diploma hanging in this house showing that he was
the best gardener of the reservation.

Living at this home was Frank Coate who was formerly of the progressive Indians
of this reservation, half blood, educated in the St. Ignatius school on the
Flathead reservation and at Fort Shaw before it was abandoned. He is a good
mechanic, both in wood and iron. He has left his own home and his wife and
children and taken up his home with Mrs. Young Man Chief, and they are living
there as man and wife. Frank Choate is a patent in fee Indian. I have been
intimately acquainted with this man for a good many years and feel a great deal
of interest in both him and his family and regret very much the present
situation of affairs in the family. Every influence almost has been brought to
bear to have him abandon his present plan and return to his wife and children
but no success has been attained so far. It may be an instance where the law can
step in and do something; however, I doubt it very much. Because of his
citizenship and her wardship it seems that we can get neither the state nor the
government to handle the case.

Her reimbursable indebtedness is $3.50
