SOME IDEAS TO KEEP YOUR CAT HEALTHY AND HAPPY.

Share
There isn't any animal that compares to a cat and they are great pets for
several reasons. Cats offer lots of entertainment, while also ridding the home
of rodents. People often underestimate how helpful a kitty can be, and how much
one can do to get rid of pests.

Before acquiring a cat, be sure that you have the wherewithal to take care of
all necessary vet care. Cats reproduce at an alarming rate, and spaying or
neutering is essential to keeping cat population under control. Check spay,
neuter and vaccination costs and packages with local vets and clinics and be
sure you can afford to give your cat proper medical care.

Choose a high quality food. The key to a healthy cat starts with nutrition. Take
peroxide codes at the ingredients label. If you look at most "popular"
commercial cat foods, you may be surprised to see the top ingredient listed is
corn. Cats are carnivores, so look for a food with a real meat as the top
ingredient. You may pay more up front, but these foods are often more
nutritionally dense, meaning your cat eats less and the bag lasts longer.

Protect your cat from strangling by making sure the cords of curtains and blinds
are secured and out of reach. When you make or purchase a dangly toy for your
cat, be sure to supervise during play. Put the toy away if you will not be
around to watch.

If you want to have your cat for many years, it is a good idea to keep them
indoors. While a cat may enjoy going outside, it is statistically proven that
outdoor cats live shorter lives than indoor cats. There are dangers to a cat
that spends time outside, not least of all other animals.

Put the right amount of cat litter in the litter box. Some people try to get out
of cleaning the box by putting too much litter in there. Cats don't like walking
on sand dunes! Two inches or so should be sufficient for the cat's needs, and
you just have to be vigilant about cleaning the box out.

Most veterinarians recommend that you feed your cat food that is in the can as
opposed to the dry varieties in the box or bag. This is because the canned food
contains more water, fat and protein than the dry variety. It is also easier to
consume for cats with dental issues.

Understand that your cat is easily influenced by its surroundings. Cats have
superior memories and will usually retain training for a lifetime. Conversely,
they also retain frightening experiences and it takes them a long time to get
over their fears. Be encouraging with your cat and avoid situations that scare
them.

Expect it to take several weeks for your current cat to accept a new cat in the
home. In the early days, you may see a lot of posturing from the cats including
hissing and swatting at each other. However, if you allow them to slowly get
used to each other, they will eventually become friends.

Ensure that your new cat is spayed or neutered. This is important even if your
cat will not be outdoors or around cats of the opposite gender. Studies show
that spayed cats are less vulnerable to uterine, mammary, and ovarian cancer.
Neutering your male cat decreases his risk of developing prostate cancer.
Another benefit of neutering is that your cat will not feel compelled to mark
his territory by spraying.

Despite popular belief, you should never give your cat milk to drink. Cats'
digestive systems lack an abundance of lactase, the enzyme used to break down
dairy products. The reality is that this can cause your cat to experience
diarrhea, vomiting, and other types of gastrointestinal discomfort. In this
case, milk does NOT do a body good!

If you will be out of town or gone for more than a few hours, make sure to hire
a pet sitter to take care of your cat. Most people think of pet sitters as
necessary for only dogs, but they are important for cats too. You need someone
to check in on your cat, make sure he eats and give him some love while you are
away.

While a big dog might look like a better hunter than a small cat, it won't track
pests the way a cat will. Cats are effective mouse-hunters, but they are also
cunning and inquisitive. This makes them fascinating pets. With these benefits,
you can have a truly great companion.
