Operational Improvement at Speed: Leadership lessons from bomb disposal
operations in Iraq and Afghanistan

Insurgents in Iraq and Afghanistan were excellent at iterative improvement. The
British army had to iterate faster and better than they could – it was quite
literally a matter of life and death. In this presentation, Ben discusses how to
use the British Army leadership doctrine of ‘mission command’ to drive faster
operational improvement through empowerment and a shared understanding of the
situation and the mission. It is interesting to see the parallels between
military leadership to modern business culture, namely empowerment and
flexibility.

Case study | GSK Implementing a Large-Scale HR Transformation Programme: Lessons
in delivery

With GSK’s incoming ‘de-merger’ taking place later in the year, significant
business changes were deemed paramount in preparing for the transition. Most
notably creating a new, standardised HR process and function – easier said than
done as each business unit requires its own unique requirements and
developments.

In this presentation, Arlette Halavage will explain GSKs recent transformation
programme, from conception to its delivery, creating a completely automated and
integrated HR system. From value stream mapping to process flows, the shift has
completely re-written the old ways of working. The wider benefits of this change
programme has been widespread and not only reduced cost but also starts to
empower staff and improve talent retention.

Going further, GSK are starting to implement Lean and Agile ways of working on
the new project, running two-week long sprints and continuously improving the
project.
