Life is Shit Festival is a DIY music festival founded in 2013 by members of the
Las Vegas music community. It was started as a free punk/rock alternative to the
corporate, pop-oriented Life is Beautiful Festival, but quickly became a
cultural institution of its own. 

The homegrown Life is Shit Festival features acts from the thriving Las Vegas
music scene, playing alongside select national acts. Past performers include
Detroit’s Timmy’s Organism (which signed to Jack White’s Third Man Records
shortly after its 2014 Life is Shit Festival appearance), and Chicago’s White
Mystery (which filmed part of its feature-length dark comedy “That Was Awesome”
at Life is Shit Festival). New York’s politically-charged anti-folk artist
Hamell on Trial headlined Life is Shit Festival in 2017, shortly after his album
Tackle Box was given an “A” rating by legendary rock journalist Robert
Christgau. And in 2019, the seventh annual Life is Shit Festival saw legendary
U.K. punk band The Vibrators headline.

The COVID-19 pandemic put a halt on Life is Shit Festival’s in-person show,
which takes place annually at Las Vegas dive bar The Dive. However, the festival
transitioned to an online format for two years. In 2020, festival organizers
hosted a 24-hour telethon, or “Shit-a-thon” — broadcast live from Downtown Las
Vegas — featuring pre-recorded performances from over 100 bands, including a
performance and live interview with Joe Jack Talcum of The Dead Milkmen. Through
online and call-in donations, the Shit-a-thon raised over $3,500 for local rock
camp Girls Rock Vegas.

The following year, in 2021, Life is Shit produced a 30-min television special,
the “Life is Shit Shitshow Shitacular” (watch it here).

Life is Shit Festival will return as an in-person festival for its tenth
anniversary show, Sept. 17, 2022 at The Dive Bar, 4110 S. Maryland Pkwy. This
year’s festival theme is “The Future is Shit!” and features a lineup of the best
punk, new wave, and rock ‘n’ roll bands Las Vegas has to offer, as well as acts
from Nashville and Reno. Additionally, Absent Minded, a legendary Las Vegas
group featuring members of hometown pop punk heroes Mercy Music, which hasn’t
performed in nearly 20 years, will reunite for a very special, one-night-only
performance.

Despite competing with a multi-day, corporate music festival, Life is Shit
Festival has grown each year, receiving overwhelming community support, as well
as media coverage from nearly all major Las Vegas media outlets, local blogs,
and even The Washington Post.

Despite its name, Life is Shit Festival makes life less shitty for some, serving
as a fundraiser each year for local charity Girls Rock Vegas, a summer camp and
after-school program which teaches underprivileged, adolescent girls in Las
Vegas how to develop a positive self-image by playing rock music. Fundraising is
achieved through an instrument drive and raffle, with prizes donated by bands
and many Las Vegas businesses, including recording studios, record stores, and
tattoo shops.

Life is Shit Festival also features an outdoor “Outhouse Stage” for poetry and
acoustic performances, food trucks, artist booths and contests for prizes.
Additionally, 2022 will mark the festival’s fifth year publishing the Life is
Shit Zine, a 68 page zine available at the festival and online, featuring band
interviews, writing, art and more (read past zines through the links below).
