And here she is!! I made this McCalls 8142 one shoulder dress with this gorgeous
soft stretch velvet! The Velvet has this gorgeous design cascading down. It’s a
beautiful floral image, and if you know me, you know, I love florals! It was
really important for me in this pattern to try to make it as seamless as
possible. And I’m not the best with pattern matching, but I feel like you still
get the full effect of the pattern on the fabric with this dress! The velvet was
super easy to work with. It has an amazing amount of stretch and is super
comfortable against my body. It is warm and cozy, but still feels very luxe and
expensive. I can definitely see myself getting more of this velvet for
headbands, a sleep set, and even more dresses for the holiday season! I just
cannot get over how soft and nice this velvet feels! I literally did not want to
take the dress off! The pattern was also super easy to make! I did it literally
in one evening. I did a lining for the top, but not a lining for the bottom ans
the dress still turned out amazing! It’s definitely a really easy pattern and
one I would even say is great for beginners, especially with this velvet!

Powerful in pink! I saw a faux leather dress on tv and thought it looked
great-powerful and a bit sexy- fitted at the top and then flared- so I looked
for a pattern and found this McCalls (M8138) for stretch fabrics and decided it
was just the right shape.
Minerva has this supple faux leather in many colours and I was drawn to this
cerise pink- I decided to go for it!
I have seen with faux leather before. Obviously no pins can be used, unless they
are in th3 seam allowance,as they will make holes. Sewing wrong sides together
is relatively easy as you are sewing the wrong side which is smooth. Inserting a
zip and binding would be more tricky so I made a neck facing and a back neck
slit to eliminate this.
Top stitching and hemming was going to be harder- I considered leaving the hem
unfinished but didn’t like that look so for that and the top stitching round the
hem I used a hack I saw somewhere( YouTube?).
Cut strips of old pattern tissue and place it under the needle over the seam as
you see. The foot will run smoothly and you can then tear off the tissue paper.
I used a sharp needle and poly thread.
I feel rather powerful in my new dress( and,no, I HAVENT seen the Barrie movie!)

I had some of this gorgeous floral carousel viscose jersey left over, and I
really wanted to use it and not have it languishing on the shelf for the winter.
I had just enough to make a long sleeve T-shirt. I felt it would really jazz up
those grey days.
I didn’t want to buy another pattern as I have so many! So ….
I had a look in my stash and I picked out the Deer and Doe “Plantain Tee “Top
pattern in a size 14. This is a free pattern and it comes in sizes 34 to 48.
Fitted at the bust and flared at the hips with elbow patches. I decided not to
use the elbow patches.
It comes in three different sleeve lengths. They’re a short, mid and long sleeve.
I use the long sleeve. I didn’t make any changes to the pattern as it’s a
perfect fit for me and with the lovely drape of the viscose jersey it will just
be a very easy to wear garment.
I sewed it up on my over locker and I had no problems. Normally before I ever
start, I usually test out the overlooker stitch length on a sample of the
material. That way you don’t run into any problems when you’re sewing up the
garment. I added tape to the shoulder seams so they wouldn’t stretch out.
The only thing I did differently, and I think I will use again, was to use 1cm
interfacing on the sleeve hem and a 1 cm interfacing on the hem. I turn them up
in the normal way and I used an elasticated zigzag stitch. It prevents any
puckering. The seams turned out lovely and flat.
I am delighted with my new top and I can see it getting lots of wear with my
jeans over the winter time.

This is my favourite sweater pattern! It is the Forgetmenot patterns Viola top.
Both made in lovely Minerva exclusive French terry. I just love the folds at the
front! Yes, it’s a tricky pattern but once you master the tucks at the front the
rest comes together easily! It helps if you have the pattern printed in just
your size. I wore the pink one to the Minerva 25th birthday pop up shop and had
a lot of positive comments. #sweaterchallenge #minervamakes #minervamakers

I don’t know about you, but I love polkadot fabric! Shirts, skirts and dresses.
Vintage styles and contemporary versions and top of the list is a shirt dress.

My husband had asked me to make him a shirt dress - with pockets of course and
short sleeves. I knew that this navy polkadot cotton fabric would be perfect. As
I have made him many shirts I used one of my self drafted shirt patterns to
construct the bodice and just added a simple rectangle gathered at the waistband
for the skirt.

The main issue was deciding where the waist would be and my original was far too
low. It was fine before I added the skirt, but then I realised that it made the
torso look far too long and I ended up taking about 5 cm out of the length of
the bodice.

I love working with fabrics like this, they are a dream to sew and are stable
and press well.

The whole garmjent was constructed on my Pfaff select 3.2 and an overlocker. I
find sewing buttonholes on my machine a dream as they are 4 step it gives me
complete control of the process and I find that they are better than any of the
automatic buttonhole functions I have used on other machines. I had to remember
to make the left side button over the right as I often get confused when making
shirts as to which side should be on top. In reality I know it’s just a social
construct but when you have grown used to buttoning a shirt in a specific
direction it can feel strange to do the opposite and I wanted this to feel
completely comfortable.

As soon as my husband had tried it in he said he needed another one! I take it
that he likes it!

I know many people might find this strange, but as a community of creative
makers we understand that expressing ourselves through what we make and wear is
very often key to reflecting out personalities. In western society it’s been
accepted for a long time that women can wear traditionally masculine styles, but
the same has not been true for men and there is a huge amount of prejudice of
those who choose to wear what is seen as traditionally female clothing. After
all - It’s just fabric and clothes and love that my husband feels confident not
only wearing things that I have made for him, but also feels that he can express
who he is via his clothing choices.

I am really loving the Teal shades that are on offer in many of Minerva's Core
Range fabrics, so when I saw this lovely cotton sateen I immediately thought of
making a skirt. Originally I planned to make a longer skirt but with the change
in season I decided to go for a much shorter but very full skirt.
Minerva's Core Range Cotton Sateen is a really special fabric, it has such a
light, fine feel to it, so it just drapes and flows so beautifully. The fabric
has two definite sides to it, I used the Sateen side for my skirt but I could
imagine using the matt side for garments too. Maybe even switching and
alternating between the two for a skirt with godets.
I washed my fabric with no problems and then pressed it. I always wash my fabric
now to eliminate any surprises, but I never want to do this step because it's
hard to press your fabric back into pristine shape!
I settled on sewing Butterick 62852 which is designed by Gertie. The vintage
look skirt is pleated, with waistband and side pockets. Now you might think this
is strange but I'm always a bit intimidated by skirts, they look so easy but
they seem so hard to get just right. So I deliberated for ages checking the
waistband measurements before settling on sewing a size 14 which worked out just
fine!
The fabric is cut on the crosswise grain so the skirt is very similar to a
circle skirt and it is extremely full.
I cut my fabric out and started sewing. I was really surprised by the huge seam
allowances, the back seam allowance is 1 1/2" and the side seams are 1" and I
have no idea why they should be so big.
After basting the pleats for the back two panels I reached for my invisible zip,
changed my foot and started sewing. Well what a disaster, my stitch line was way
off the teeth and my machine just couldn't seem to feed the fabric plus zip
correctly resulting in tiny stitches. To make matters worse I tried to get
closer to the teeth but I just made it a million times worse. The only option
was to unpick two rows of miniature stitches. When this was done I knew I had a
lot of saving to do because my fabric was bruised. I have had problems with this
make of zip before on delicate fabric, I think it's too heavy so I decided to
use a lighter regular zip from my stash which just needed cutting down to a
shorter length.
I moved the zip to the side of the skirt which sacrificed the left pocket. I
also increased the back seam allowance so that the bruising would not be visible
and sized the side seams down accordingly. I felt that using a regular zip would
look neater sewn into the side seam. I hope I don't make the mistake of just
carrying on again as it proved a time consuming mistake.
The rest of the skirt was a really easy sew, lots of care needs to be taken with
the pleats to get them looking crisp and neat. The key is to do lots of basting
to keep them in the right place. It might be a bit extra hand sewing but it's
worth the time. I was so pleased when the waistband went on well especially as I
didn't now have the corresponding notches to keep it all on track.
To finish I sewed a narrow hem which involves stitching each turning. I find
this a really accurate way to get a good finish.
I'm really pleased with how the skirt looks, the colour and the beautiful flow
of the fabric just gives the skirt a light touch.
I have paired my skirt with the top which is view B on the same pattern. This
jersey is no longer available from Minerva but the top would work well with
Minerva's exclusive stretch jersey. You may want to lengthen the body as it is
quite short.
This cotton sateen really is a beautiful fabric to sew with and it has a very
luxurious look and feel, I just love the depth of colour too. We got these
pictures on a trip to Fountains Abbey which was a perfect setting for such a
classic set.

I will confess I’m not a fan of long complicated makes unless it’s something
special, I much prefer something that can be made in a day or two. So after my
last make that took an age I was really looking for something quick and easy,
hence this newlook top that I’ve hacked into a dress. Despite it being autumn I
wanted something for a winter holiday.
As the rain has stopped for a mo I’ve managed to get some pictures of my latest
make.

This printed landscape from Minerva I find totally inspiring, I just love how it
starts with fishes swimming moving into beautiful flowers on land through to
birds in the sky.
The print is available in challis and in linen, my dress is made from the linen
viscose blend.
When the fabric arrives it does feel quite stiff, but once it’s washed and dried
it does really soften and drape. The more it’s washed the softer it becomes.
It does fray so before washing I do overlock not just the cut edge but also the
selvage just so that it doesn’t clog up my machines filter.

It’s a lovely stable fabric that sews and cuts very easily none of the slipping
and sliding around and because of the viscose I find it doesn’t crease and
crumble in the way pure linen does.

As for the pattern I chose I didn’t want to detract from the print by cutting
into it too much so this pattern seemed appropriate. My only decision was which
part of the lovely landscape did I want to be the star.
I just loved the big yellow flower so wanted that for the front and the
beautiful birds on the back.
If I’d have chosen a pattern that had virtually no seams other than side seams
then finding the right part of the fabric would be so simple but as this pattern
does have a front panel to the waist and an upper bodice joined to the skirt.
Before I placed the pattern onto the fabric I did take a very good look at where
the pieces would join.
Once I’d chosen my spot it did place the skirt and bodice next to each other on
the fabric matching the notches so that I could ensure the best possible flow of
the print.

I don’t often think I’m lucky being short but on this occasion it has been a
blessing as I’ve been able to get all of the print into the full length skirt
but still have a small amount going up into the bodice in a place that although
not perfectly pattern matched does seem to blend and flow.
As the majority of the bodice would have been sky, I did decide to add a binding
around the front panel, and chose a pink bias binding.

This pattern does have a very very low cut bodice so I have added rouleau loops
and covered buttons up the front just to add some modesty.

In order to hack the skirt to full length I did reduce the fullness of the skirt
pattern a little in 2 places on each piece. I didn’t just take in from the side
seam as this would change the drape of the skirt.

I’m really happy with this make, it’s just such a shame I have to wait a couple
of months to wear it 😃

it became my passion, that Minerva found me that I am in this AMAZING and kind
group who understand and support each other and that I was able to recreate a
dress I saw online!🖤

It was love at first sight when I saw this dress (first picture).
I almost bought it but then I remembered that I had similar fabric in my stash
and that the pattern looks EXACTLY like the Society dress from Gertie Hirsch (a
Patreon pattern of hers)😍 So of course I didn’t buy it but made it😍
Made my usual size 10DD and I got the fabrics from Minerva!

What do you guys think?
