Large-cap stocks were up by 3.71% and small caps by 0.37% (S&P 500 and 600 indexes). Things were more mixed with international stocks. Developed-market stocks closed the month up 0.64% but emerging-market stocks fell by 2.26% (MSCI EAFE and Emerging Markets indexes). It was another volatile month. The S&P 500 moved by +/- 1% on 14 days in March, compared to 10 in February. However, nine days were up and five down in March, whereas in February, most big market moves were negative. Interest rates rose in March and so bond prices fell. The Bloomberg U.S. Aggregate Bond index was down 2.78%. WHY IT HAPPENED The main drivers of volatility in February were still factors in March: the war in Ukraine, inflation concerns and the Federal Reserve’s interest-rate policy. Last month, the start of the war was a major negative shock to the market, sending stocks down. This is now “priced in” (it’s not a shock anymore), and stocks have been moving in response to new information, both positive and negative. For example, in the middle of the month, there were hopeful signs about a possible way to peace between the two nations, and stocks rose. Other factors influenced markets too. The employment market continues to be strong. In March, weekly first-time claims for unemployment insurance fell to their lowest level since 1969, and the unemployment rate dipped to 3.8%. New job creation exceeded expectations. On the other hand, inflation also exceeded expectations, hitting 7.9%, the highest since 1982. The Federal Reserve made its long-anticipated first increase in interest rates, upping the federal funds rate by 0.25%. In this month’s sidebar, we discuss why it makes sense to hold bonds even as the Federal Reserve increases interest rates. WHAT IT MEANS FOR YOU Market volatility is unsettling, but it’s important to remember volatility means markets can jump upward as well as fall downward. February was a volatile down month, and March a volatile up month. So, if you’d gotten out of the market in February because of the volatility, you would have missed out on the recovery in March. It may be difficult to stay focused on maintaining a long-term, diversified portfolio when markets are volatile, but in times like this, it is even more important to not make emotional investing decisions. © 2022 EDELMAN FINANCIAL ENGINES, LLC.
