GRAEME'S STORY

TO MINISTER PEARSON

DON'T CUT WORKCOVER FOR INJURED WORKERS LIKE ME

Use the tool here to send a message to Minister Danny Pearson - No Labor MP
should vote for a Bill that hurts injured workers.

Your voice can help persuade the Labor Government not to proceed with these
abhorrent changes to WorkCover.

Adding a personal message, however brief, will greatly improve the impact of
your email.

Consider mentioning:

 * Your experience of an injury, workplace or otherwise, and why time to recover
   was important

 * Your knowledge of a friend or coworker who was injured at work or experienced
   stress or burnout

 * Your values - why you think everyone should be supported through sickness and
   injury

GRAEME'S STORY

I was a formwork carpenter working in the building industry when an injury to my
foot landed me 5 days in the ICU and nearly 8 weeks in hospital.

Over the next 6 years I had a further 8 operations. After 130 weeks on WorkCover
I was still limping around and waiting anxiously for operations to relieve my
pain.

I certainly didn’t have enough of my own savings to support my family through
all that time. Without WorkCover and the building industry’s entitlement scheme,
I would have lost everything.

THE CHANGES

 1. Workers who suffer injuries as a result of work-related stress or burnout
are no longer entitled to compensation.

 2. A new Whole Person Impairment will kick injured workers off the scheme after
130 weeks in they do not pass the test.

CUTS AREN'T THE ANSWER

Rather than further stigmatizing psychological injury, we must support workers
to seek to receive help earlier, invest in prevention and stand up a mental
health workforce to prevent the costly complications that stem from delayed
treatment.

Kicking workers off compensation is an accounting trick for the government. The
money “saved” from compensation will end up costing Victorians far more, as
injured and traumatized individuals present to emergency health, public housing,
and other social services.

The Victorian Government should respect the expert advice given at the
Legislative Council Committee Inquiry and follow the recommendations of the
Legislative Council Report. No Labor MP should vote for these changes to
WorkCover.

It is normal that as people become more aware of psychological health and
injury, more workers are seeking treatment for psychological injuries sustained
at work. These claims are more expensive to resolve than physical injuries,
partly due to complexity, and partly because it is so difficult to get an
appointment with a psychologist. With any injury, the faster you see a health
professional the quicker you will recover.
