BREAKING IT DOWNFIFTH HARMONY AND CAMILA CABELLO’S UPS AND DOWNS: FEUD, LEAVING
THE GROUP, MORE

A long road. Following Camila Cabello‘s departure from Fifth Harmony, there were
some ups and downs between the singer and her former bandmates Ally Brooke,
Normani Kordei, Dinah Jane and Lauren Jauregui.

In December 2016, the “Havana” songstress announced that she would be stepping
back from the group, which was formed on the X Factor in 2012. “After four and a
half years of being together, we have been informed via her representatives that
Camila has decided to leave Fifth Harmony. We wish her well,” the remaining
Fifth Harmony members shared via Twitter at the time.

Every Time the Fifth Harmony Girls Spoke About Their Experience in the Group:
Ally, Dinah and More

Following their public announcement, Camila hit back in her own social media
post.

“Saying that they were just informed through my representatives that I was
‘leaving the group’ is simply not true. Just like the other girls said in their
statement about their plans, I had also planned to continue with my own solo
endeavors in the new year but I did not intend to end things with Fifth Harmony
this way,” Camila wrote. “As sad as it is to see this chapter ending this way, I
will continue to root them all on as individuals and as a group, I wish nothing
but the best for them, all the success in the world and true happiness.”

Despite their well wishes for each other, fans wondered if the departure led to
a feud between 5H and Camila. After the Cinderella star’s statement went viral,
the group shared one final social media post about the entire situation noting
that they didn’t want to “engage in a battle of we said, she said.”

“We were truly hurt. We’ve been together for almost five years, been through ups
and downs,” Fifth Harmony’s Twitter post read. “We truly support anyone’s
decision to do what makes them happy, and to that end, we do wish Camila all the
best although saddened by the way she and her team handled the situation. To
watch Camila walk away from this special world we’ve built with you is tough but
we will move forward together.”

Relationship Stands Now

They went on to release one more album as a foursome before going on an
indefinite hiatus in March 2018. Over the years, the girls seemingly threw shade
at one another and spoke about whether or not there really was a feud between
them.

In August 2019, Camila assured Variety that there was no “animosity” between her
and the other four girls. “The courses of our lives have drifted,” the musician
explained. “But if I saw any of them at an awards show, I would say hi and it
would be totally cool. It feels like there’s been a reset just because of the
amount of time that’s passed.”

NOVEMBER 2015

When Camila teamed up with Shawn Mendes for their song “I Know What You Did Last
Summer,” Fifth Harmony split rumors started swirling. Camila was quick to shut
them down on social media. “There is not enough time in the world to explain
yourself to people that already think they know ur intentions … so let it go,”
she tweeted at the time.

FEBRUARY 2017

Camila chatted with Seventeen Magazine and revealed why she left the
band. “Fifth Harmony wasn’t the maximum expression of me individually,” the
singer explained. “My goal is to be brave and open up my soul.”

She also told Billboard that same month “it was really intense” to leave. “It’s
hard for me to talk about it,” she added. “It makes me sad.”

APRIL 2017

The remaining Fifth Harmony girls spoke about being a foursome.

“It’s really great because the four of us are really in sync with each other,”
Ally told Galore Magazine. “We’re pretty open about most things. We try to
respect each other as much as we can. For us, communication is really important.
Also, we enjoy a lot of the same things as each other! Like going to get frozen
yogurt, or go to the movies, or talk about boys, exchange music, have fun at the
red carpet and encourage each other with, ‘Hey you look beautiful!'”

JULY 2017

When asked about the band without Camila during a Billboard interview, Fifth
Harmony spoke about the new dynamic. Dinah said, “Let’s just say we’re in a
better place now — there are no secrets in this circle.”

AUGUST 2017

When Fifth Harmony performed at the 2017 VMAs, they appeared to shade Camila by
removing a fifth figure off the stage during their performance.

“We always get asked all the time if we’re getting a fifth member and we wanted
to show the world in an artistic way that, hey, the four of us are Fifth Harmony
and we’re stronger and better than we’ve ever been,” Ally said in an interview
with Good Morning America after the performance. “It was such a monumental
moment for us. We were at the VMAs, we had rain, we had the splits, we had a mic
drop!”

JANUARY 2018

Camila told The New York Times that the VMAs performance “hurt my feelings.”

“I wasn’t expecting it, I wasn’t prepared for it — especially because at that
point I’d moved on from it,” she explained. “I was just like, ‘What? Why?'”

AUGUST 2018

No more bad blood! Camila told Access at the time that she and the Fifth Harmony
girls were in a “really good place.”

“I saw Normani recently at the Billboard Awards and we caught up and I told her
I’m super excited for her,” the singer shared. “I don’t remember the last time I
saw the other girls, but I told her to say the same thing to them. I feel like
there’s just been enough time and distance away from the situation that we’re
all genuinely in a good place right now. And honestly, there’s just no time in
life for that stuff. Like, what’s the point?”

FEBRUARY 2020

After Camila apologized for a series of since-deleted racist social media posts
that resurfaced, Normani spoke publicly about her former bandmate.

“It would be dishonest if I said that this particular scenario didn’t hurt me,”
she shared in a statement to Rolling Stone. “It took days for her to acknowledge
what I was dealing with online and then years for her to take responsibility for
the offensive tweets that recently resurfaced. Whether or not it was her
intention, this made me feel like I was second to the relationship that she had
with her fans.”

Normani added, “I really hope that an important lesson was learned in this. I
hope there is genuine understanding about why this was absolutely unacceptable.
I have spoken what is in my heart and pray this is transparent enough that I
never have to speak on it again.”

OCTOBER 2020

Lauren spoke about her friendship with Camila on the “En La Sala” podcast. “We
had love for each other, like genuine friendship,” she shared at the time.

APRIL 2022

Camila seemingly addressed her departure from the group in the lyrics for songs
“Psychofreak.”

“I been on this ride since I was fifteen,” she sings on the song. “I don’t blame
the girls for how it went down, down.”

APRIL 2022

“We have been like supportive of each other through like DMs and stuff,” she
told Reuters. “I’m like in a in a really good place with them.”

JULY 2022

Camila posted a touching tribute to Fifth Harmony on their 10th year anniversary
on July 28, 2022.

“10 years since this f–kin wild ride,” she wrote as her Instagramcaption. “Crazy
to think when this picture was taken we barely knew each other and the journey
we were about to go on would change our lives forever . I wanna remember the
laughs and inside jokes and the pinch me I’m dreaming moments. pls let’s all
forget the times when I would do my own eyeliner thx . much love and happiness
to these ladies @fifthharmony and thx to the fans who had fun with us along the
way x”
