UNITED AIRLINES STARTS NONSTOP FLIGHTS BETWEEN LONDON & BOSTON - WHAT TO EXPECT

After updating its cabins with premium-heavy configurations, United is keen to
make the most of the changing industry climate.

After much anticipation, United Airlines began flights to Boston Logan
International from Heathrow Airport last night. This launch is part of a busy
schedule between the carrier’s United States gateways and the United Kingdom’s
largest commercial airport.

FINALLY HERE

In October, the Chicago-based carrier announced that it was adding five new
flights from Heathrow to the US. Along with the Boston launch, it shared it was
adding daily flights to Denver, along with a second daily service. It also added
sixth and seventh daily flights to Newark. There was also the revelation of a
third daily flight to San Francisco and the resumption of daily operations to
Los Angeles.

The Boston service began yesterday in the form of Flight 24, which departed
Boston at 23:00 and landed in London at 10:35 this morning. The Boeing 767-300
landed with 46 Polaris, 22 Premium Plus, 43 extra-legroom economy, and 56
standard economy seats. Notably, United provides more premium seats between
London and Boston than any other US-based operator.

STRONG PRESENCE

Bob Schumacher - Director of Sales, United Kingdom, Ireland, Israel, South
Africa, and Off-line markets at United Airlines, was on the scene to welcome the
inaugural flight. He recently told Simple Flying the following about the
company’s Boston service:

> “We have the brand presence and representation in the market, which is so
> mature on both sides of the pond. So, we can sustain a route that needs good
> competition and we will certainly be providing that. We will be operating in
> our high-J configuration 767 business class seats in the front, and we all
> make a very strong competitive system in that marketplace. We have a huge
> portfolio of US corporate accounts. Some of them have sub-offices, some have
> head offices, and some have regional offices in that marketplace. We know the
> East Coast very well. We've served East Coast very well. But, it's been
> historically or will be until the end of March over New York and over
> Washington. This is our chance to connect further up, if you will, and to
> offer a wider variety of transatlantic connections."

The launch of the Boston to London route came after the Competition & Markets
Authority (CMA) found that there was not enough competition on specific routes
to Europe from the US. It proposed for the joint venture between British Airways
and American Airlines to concede slots if a competitor wanted to start
operations to certain airports. Subsequently, a remedy slot became officially
available, and United took advantage of the opportunity amid its expansion
plans.

BACK ON TRACK

The airline has been keen to develop across the Atlantic. Late last year, it
affirmed that by late spring, it will fly 22 daily flights between Heathrow and
the United States, and this now becoming a reality. The company highlighted that
the airport is the most booked international destination for its business
customers. Since entry restrictions to the US were eased, there has been a
plethora of customers flying in from the UK. Moreover, the UK has since dropped
all of its COVID-19 entry requirements and the summer season is fast
approaching. So, we can expect plenty of customers flying into Boston with
United this year.

What are your thoughts about United’s services to Boston from London Heathrow?
What do you make of the airline’s ambitions across the Atlantic? Let us know
what you think of the overall plans in the comment section.
