We’re beyond proud to launch our 2023 Impact Report, which you can read here -
impact-report.codebar.io

codebar is a charity that facilitates the growth of a diverse tech community by
running free regular programming workshops for minority groups in tech.

Join our community

Our goal is to enable minority group members to learn programming in a safe and
collaborative environment and expand their career opportunities. To achieve this
we run free regular workshops, regular one-off events and try to create
opportunities for our students making technology and coding more accessible.

STUDENTS

Our students come from a variety of backgrounds. Some want to become full-time
developers, whereas some would like to learn the basics of coding in a
supportive environment.

Join our vibrant community and attend our workshops.

Join us as a student

COACHES

We encourage new students to work on our HTML/CSS, JavaScript, Ruby, Python or
Git tutorials. We also help them understand programming concepts.

Therefore we are always on the lookout for more developers to join our community
and help coach at our workshops.

WORKSHOPS

We are hosted by some amazing companies who support our cause. Our normal format
is 30 minutes of socialising with food and drink, followed by a lightning talk
then coding.

Help our expansion and enable us to provide help and support to our chapters by
hosting and sponsoring our workshops.

> I started attending Codebar to learn how to code an idea I had, but I ended up
> learning more than just the basics. I have built my initial prototype and
> progressed far more than I thought I could. The best part about the workshops
> are the coaches, they are very patient and help you understand difficult
> concepts. Attending weekly has given me the confidence to code any idea into a
> prototype – something I didn’t think I could do a year ago! I would highly
> recommend Codebar to anyone, especially if you come from a non-technical
> background like me!

Harini Manivannan

> I started using some of the online schools and whilst they are helpful to
> supplement knowledge, there is nothing like talking through things with a
> coach, which Codebar provides. I know no matter what I decide to do in the
> future, coding and programming will be an important part of the industry (in
> fact it already is in many industries) and the fact that Codebar encourages
> those who would otherwise not have an opportunity to learn how to code (which
> I know is a category I would have fallen under) is great.

Priya Patil

> Thanks to the patience and clarity given from tutors, I understand coding and
> programming much better and this has improved my employment prospects.
> Tackling coding and programming by myself would have been impossible and my
> motivational levels were quite low. I have enjoyed the community feel in
> Codebar and the support from coaches and fellow students has made my goal of
> becoming a developer more attainable.

Lisa Mac

> I find Codebar's mentoring model incredibly empowering. When learning
> programming at university, I found it hard to speak up in class or ask for
> help. Working through online coding courses later in life became frustrating
> when I couldn't fix a non-obvious mistake on my own, or boring if I couldn't
> see a real-world application. Codebar mentors share not just their coding
> skills 'toolbox' but also the knowledge of when and how it's best to use each
> 'tool', and are honest about their own experiences of the technology industry.
> Best of all, the Codebar code of conduct provides a safe learning environment,
> which I find makes it much easier to ask questions. I have learned so much
> already from the tutorials, and now have the skills and confidence to start
> work on my own projects.

Jacqueline Currie

> Codebar is awesome! The atmosphere is excellent - everyone is really friendly
> and the coaches really want to help in any way they can. Coding alone in your
> room isn't great for when you get stuck and so meeting other coders at Codebar
> made me realise that others were struggling with the same problems that I was.
> This really helped boost my confidence, which is vital when learning a new
> subject. Thoroughly recommended.
