Community Impact We received 2 $100 giftcards to help us purchase food supplies
for our major fundraising event for 2024. It was wonderful to not have to worry
about how to pay for the supplies needed to bake/cook and provide beverages. The
event was attended by approximately 100 people. Thank you, Dawson Creek Co-op
for your assistance with this success! How You Can Help We operate 100% on
donated funds. The costs we have to cover are a living wage for 2 staff members
that provide advocacy for clients faced with the difficulties around being
pregnant, whether it's planned or unplanned, and also provide emotional &
spiritual support for those faced with the loss of a pregnancy, infant or child.
We also have to cover the overhead costs of running an office (rent, hydro,
phones, etc.), and many times provide material items to clients such as diapers,
wipes, lotions, soaps, clothing, blankets, strollers, car seats, etc. We accept
donations for all those items.

Teacher & Staff Appreciation Week is May 6th-10th
There are so many amazing educators and staff members who work tirelessly to
support and inspire students every day. Next week is Teacher & Staff
Appreciation Week and is the perfect time to celebrate those who help our
communities shine! The Random Acts of Kindness Foundation has some great ideas
for how individuals, children, and families can show gratitude for teachers and
staff all week long: Sunday, May 5th: Chalk the Walk Gather with fellow
community members to write messages of appreciation and draw colourful pictures
on the sidewalks for teachers and staff to see on Monday morning. Monday, May
6th: Classroom Decorations Coordinate with students and parents to decorate your
teacher's classroom with banners, posters, and artwork expressing heartfelt
gratitude.  Tuesday, May 7th: Letters to Former Educators Take a moment to write
a note of appreciation to a former teacher, coach, or mentor who has made a
lasting impact on your life. Let them know how much they've influenced and
inspired you. Wednesday, May 8th: Tokens of Appreciation Show teachers and staff
some kindness with small tokens of appreciation, such as flowers, chocolates, or
breakfast treats. Brighten their day with a little something special! Thursday,
May 9th: Personalized Appreciation Send a staff member or two a hand-written
note, a picture your student draws, a video, or an email of appreciation. Let
them know just how much they mean to you and the school community. Staff emails
can usually be found on school websites. Friday, May 10th: Volunteer Sign up to
volunteer. Assist teachers with tasks such as grading papers, organizing
materials, or preparing classroom activities.

Kindness is contagious—how science backs this up
When a windy arctic blast raged through the Northeast U.S. this past winter,
more than 600,000 people lost power for days. Marjorie Radlo-Zandi was one of
them. Because she don’t own a generator, her family toughed it out in the
freezing cold without power. It tested everyone’s mettle. But when she stepped
back from her extreme discomfort for a few moments, she discovered some
extraordinary goings on: random acts of kindness. The owner of a new takeout
kiosk around the corner filled her thermos with boiling water several times a
day. For free. The proprietor of a café she visits every morning, for her ritual
coffee and croissant hot out of the oven, wanted to help. A man she know from
frequent walks with her dog rushed toward her on the snowy path to warn that a
tree she was about to pass could fall at any moment. (It fell later that day.)
There was no mandate for any of these behaviors. People acted out of genuine
kindness and compassion. The exceptional acts of kindness took her out of her
stressed-out, shivering-cold pity party by elevating her mood and boosting her
overall well-being.   Instead of feeling isolated and alone, she was buoyed by a
sense of social support and belonging within her community.   A CLOSE LOOK AT
WELL-BEING “Well-being” is a state that makes up various aspects of one’s health
and happiness. We look at it in terms of physical, mental, and social. The big
freeze we experienced in the Northeast, with its extended power outage and
abundant outbreak of kindness, fostered a shared—and individual—sense of
well-being. According to research by Amit Kumar, an assistant professor of
marketing and psychology at the University of Texas at Austin who studies
happiness, people underestimate the positive impact a random act of kindness has
on others.  Working with his colleague Nicholas Epley, Kumar found that both the
person acting kindly and the kindness recipient were in a better, more positive
mood than normal after the kindness exchange. A positive mood directly impacts
your overall emotional well-being. You recognize it as an unmistakable glow that
wells up inside you.  There's more! Click to read about "catastrophe
compassion", "emotional contagion" and other scientifically-backed reasons for
and benefits of kindness in this Fast Company article:

The power of volunteering - happiness & career growth
You know volunteering is a great way to give back to your community, but it’s
also a surprisingly powerful way to reap your own rewards—in terms of happiness,

mental health issues at record highs, volunteering offers an important way to
build your own wellbeing while you’re giving back. And despite the obstacles of
busy schedules and overloaded calendars, you can find the time. It’s possible to
fit giving into your life, and even to shift your perceptions of time—and
