HE CAME TO A MOUNTAINSIDE. . .

. . .AND FOUND THE WAY OF LIFE HE HAD BEEN SEARCHING FOR.

READ AN EXTRACT

In 1990, Fred Callow, armed with ‘self-belief and convictions and music’ left
the UK to put down roots in rural Ireland in search of a simpler, more authentic
way of life. In West Cork, he discovered what he calls his ‘Family’, a group of
like-minded people striving to live an alternative lifestyle in a place called
Cool Mountain, not far from the town of Dunmanway.

In Blow-In, Fred tells of his involvement over thirty years with this group of
‘strongly individualistic’ and ‘sometimes eccentric’ members, many of them
refugees from the harsh political realities of Thatcher Britain.

For a while, this ‘hippy’ community became an easy target for dishonest media
commentators and politicians, but in reality it had from the beginning an
excellent relationship with local people and contributed greatly to the arts and
crafts and musical culture of West Cork. Although the community wasn’t without
its own internal problems, as Fred explains in this candid account, it was at
the end of the day simply a collection of people ‘looking to feed and house
their families. . .gardeners and smallholders and basket makers having a little
fun drinking and playing music together along the journey’.

As well as documenting life on Cool Mountain, Blow-In provides a critical
reflection on change in rural Ireland over the past three decades.

ON THE WAY

“The water does not know how old I am. This is what I keep telling myself, as
today I am feeling old and tired. It has been a month since my last attempt and
I am facing my monster again. My nemesis.”

Stephen Redmond was the first in the world to complete the Oceans Seven, a
series of seven gruelling crosss-channel swims in different parts of the world,
and yet his greatest challenge is the 33-kilometre swim around the Fastnet
Lighthouse off the south coast of Ireland. In this fascinating book, written in
a witty, self-deprecating style, he recounts his previous successes, how the
Fastnet challenge began to dominate his life, and how he manages to overcome the
many demons that plague him and believe in his own destiny.

This is a tale of great honesty and courage and will be of great interest to
anyone facing great challenges in their life.

‘If you have to read one book about bird-watching, misuse of drugs, and Glasgow
Celtic, make sure it’s this one. All others are an illusion, mere tomfoolery on
the playing field of life’s suchness.’ – Yogi Zen master Roshi Tzepan

The author, a Scottish Zen Master, in deep contemplation: ‘Some would say this
work is a dream of an impressionist’s experiential Caledonia. Ignore them, they
are not well.’

This is an updated and newly illustrated edition of Eleanor Hull's classic work
on the history of Ireland before the arrival of Christianity. It serves as an
excellent introduction to early Irish mythology and provides a fascinating
overview of a society dominated by kings, warriors, druids, and poets.

Eleanor Hull (1860-1935) was a co-founder of the Irish Texts Society for the
publication of early manuscripts and wrote extensively on early and medieval
Irish literature and history. She was also president of the Irish Literary
Society.

Pagan Ireland is introduced by the renowned mythologist Daragh Smyth. His most
recent book is Earthing the Myths (published by the Merrion Press), a
county-by-county guide to myth, folklore, and early history. He has also written
A Guide to Irish Mythology (1996) and Cú Chulainn: An Iron Age Hero (2005).

ABOUT US

O'Sweeney & O'Donovan is a publishing partnership between Maurice Sweeney and
Mary O'Donovan. We have done lots of things in previous lives (journalism, book
editing and design, running a taxi base, legal research, human rights advocacy,
pulling pints) and now hope to make a good living by making good books.

Based in West Cork, Ireland, but with an eye on the international market, we are
just beginning, so there are no great best-selling achievements to boast about
yet. But keep an eye on this space.

We are interested in new ideas, so please don't hesitate to contact us using the
form below. We are especially interested in non-fiction.
