The US government enacted the comprehensive health care reform law known as the Affordable Care Act (ACA) in 2010. This law requires that major medical insurance plans provide coverage that meets specific requirements. These 10 "essential health benefits" include, for example, maternity care and mental health coverage, which may not be available with other forms of insurance. In addition, the ACA protects people with pre-existing health conditions such as cancer or diabetes. Under the ACA, health insurers cannot deny coverage, drop coverage, or charge more if someone has a pre-existing condition. There are four standard ACA plan types or stages: bronze, silver, gold, and platinum. The premiums increase at each stage and the out-of-pocket costs decrease. To help cover the cost of ACA health insurance, some people are eligible for premium subsidies . A "catastrophic plan" is available only to people younger than 30 or those who meet specific requirements. Catastrophic plans have the highest deductible of all the ACA plans. COMPARE ACA PLANS WHAT IS SHORT-TERM HEALTH INSURANCE? Medical insurance plans that provide coverage for a defined period are called “short-term” plans. These generally provide from 1 month to 364 days of coverage. “ACA-compliant” plans, on the other hand, provide coverage for longer periods. As with ACA plans, most short-term plans have monthly premiums, deductibles, co-insurance, co-pays, and out-of-pocket maximums. In addition, short-term plans may cover visits to doctors, lab tests, hospitalization, and emergency care. SHOP FOR SHORT TERM HEALTH INSURANCE HOW TO CHOOSE A DENTAL PLAN? Many dental plans are available, but which one is best for your unique situation? To choose the best dental plan, you’ll need to focus on your individual needs and the available plan options. Some important questions to consider include the following: * What routine dental care do the available plans cover? (Routine care includes things like exams, cleanings, and x-rays, for example.) * What major dental services do the available options cover? (Major dental services include things like crowns, bridges, and dentures.) * Do any of the options available to you include diagnostic and preventive services in their coverage?
