MIND OF A PREPPER

ALWAYS BE PREPARED FOR ANY EMERGENCY!

Welcome to a site that dedicates itself to the mindset of always be as prepared
as possible for all possible emergencies. Now within that mindset, we preach to
our readers to try and understand themselves and their limitations along with
what would be the most likely emergency situation you or your family could
experience. In my opinion, [it will most likely be a natural disaster] rather
than an unnatural disaster. That is why I tend to optimize my emergency kit and
bugout bag for that particular disaster scenario.

Being prepared for disaster situations is more than zombie killer weapons and
canned food. As glamorous as that, in the real-life situations, those things
will do you very little good. In a lot of cases, they could actually slow you
down and lower your chances of survival. So to stay true to our mindset, we try
to include as much information as possible about as many different types of
emergencies and disaster situations that you or your family could experience.

[SURVIVAL TIPS AND TRICKS]

[SURVIVAL TIP #1] IMMEDIATE NEEDS ARE (AIR, WATER, FOOD, SHELTER, FIRE)

The most basic and fundamental survivalist checklist always start with the 5
basics. the obvious ones are Air, Water, and food. We have a saying in the
survivalist niche and that is called the (3,3,30 rule). Your absolute immediate
needs mean that you can not go more than (3-minutes without air) – (3-days
without water) and (30-days without food). After the 3 most important you have
the final 2 items to fulfill your immediate need for survival and that is
Shelter and Fire. Those 5 rules round out your immediate needs. Once you have
those handled you are then cleared to move on to the rest of your survival
plane.

THE 3, 3, 30 RULE

I understand that within each one of these tips is an entire set of specific
skills and require a blog for each and every one. But with that said this is a
good all-around set of tips to create a very basic checklist.  If we know our
immediate needs. Then we know what is most important to us and what emergency
items go in the emergency kit or bugout bag first. Those survival items also
usually get the lions share of the budget. Because they also tend to be the most
high-quality pieces of survival gear that you will own. The reason for this is
they will probably be the most used item out of all of your gear.

Which brings us to our emergency kit aka the bugout bag. We break down every
group of items that we believe should be a priority in your bugout bag. We
take things like your basic flashlight. Everybody knows that you should have
some sort of light in your survival kit but what kind of light. There are so
many types of survival flashlights on the market we try to break down the pros
and cons of each one. We also include flashlights that have unique features that
the other ones don’t have. This way you get a better sense of the piece of
survival gear that you are looking to buy.

[SURVIVAL TIP #2] KNOW YOUR NEEDS AND TAKE INVENTORY!

Don’t let this be your survival kit!

You have to know what your families and your needs are to begin to plan for your
survival procedures. For instance, my daughter has asthma so I always have 120
days worth of inhalers on hand. I tend to overcompensate so every single
emergency kit has at least a 60 day supply. So if one of your loved ones has a
need that goes beyond the standard emergency situation.  Make sure that you
recognize that and include that in whatever survival plan and bugout bag that
you create.

The second part of that survival tip is that after you understand your
families needs. You must take inventory of your gear! In a lot of ways knowing
what you have is the first part of knowing what you need. So after you figure
out your emergency strategies make sure that you have the emergency equipment to
go along with your plan. That way you will be able to see where your holes are
in your gear. That will make it much easier to complete your emergency kit.
Instead of trying to just guess what you have. You will have a complete
inventory of what you have and what you need to save your family. Then you can
get to shopping and start checking off those items on your list one at a time.

On our review pages, you can get a great idea of the 1 or 2 items that you are
missing in your survival kit. Even if you don’t buy anything you can follow the
links to Amazon and look at the other items that Amazon offers. After all, they
are the largest supplier of emergency and survival equipment in the world.

[SURVIVAL TIP #3] CHECK YOUR SURVIVAL PLANS AND GEAR REGULARLY!

Don’t wait until the end to realize it’s broken.

Making sure your gear works is just as crucial as owning the gear in the first
place. I suggest at least 4 times per year you take a few hours and go through
and at the very least take inventory of each item. You should make a visual and
physical inspection of every survival tool you have. So that means grab that
emergency crank flashlight and take a good look at it and make sure there is no
physical damage. Then you are gonna want to test the piece of equipment if it is
digital or battery operated.

Some items do not need to be inspected everytime you do your quarterly check of
your bugout bag. Things like your knife,  poncho, or hammocks things like that.
Because if you pack your bag like I do those kinds of things are usually at the
very bottom of the bag. I like to keep the survival items that I would need
access to on a more regular basis toward the top for the ease of access.

CHECK YOUR GEAR

But no matter what, make the time to check your gear. You do not want to be
reliant on a certain product and find out at the most crucial moment in your
life that the life-saving piece of survival item you need does not work or is
malfunctioning. And why spend all the time and money on your survival to realize
in the worst of time it was for nothing. Even worse, you are actually left with
nothing and now your odds of survival have gone down drastically.

So do not wait to pull out that generator that you own. That you have been
thinking about converting with a natural gas conversion kit. Actually, take the
day and get it done. You could provide a true game changer if the time ever
comes where you actually need it.

DON’T FORGET YOUR EMERGENCY SURVIVAL FAMILY PLAN

Just as important as checking your gear is checking and updating your families
survival plan. You must check your families survival plan to make sure all of
your routes are still available. Sometimes people move or change their phone
number so the meetup locations and contact numbers might need to be updated.
These are very important because as soon as you know that your immediate family
is ok the very next thing you do is realize all the family members that are not
with you at that moment. At that point contacting them become paramount. Which
leads us to the next good survival tip.

[SURVIVAL TIP #4] HAVE BACKUP METHODS OF COMMUNICATING.

Be this guy

In true crises situation, the cold hard fact is that the cell towers will be
overloaded and nobody will be able to make a cellphone call. It has happened
multiple times in many situations. So do not rely on your cell phone as your
only form of contacting your loved ones during a survival situation. You want to
make sure you have multiple options. I personally have a landline phone still.
In an emergency situation, you can still use your house phone. As long as it is
not a digital phone (in case your power is out) the phone jack provides enough
power for the old basic phones needed to make calls. Most people will not have a
home phone so these lines will not be overloaded and should be open for
business.

THE ULTIMATE PIECE OF COMMUNICATION GEAR

The ultimate piece of communication gear is a SAT phone. This phone uses
satellites that orbit the earth for its communication lines. So you are able to
make a call no matter where you are in the world and no matter what the level
the infrastructure around you is at that moment. Some handheld GPS units also
use the satellite infrastructure. The bad side is it they both are powered by a
battery. But as long as you have solar panels or a hand crank flashlight/radio
you will be good to go on a permanent basis.

Just like in any situation throughout our lives, the gear makes the difference.
The equipment that we chose for ourselves is going to either increase our odds
of survival or decrease our odds of survival. The quality of that equipment is
going to determine how much your odds increase or decrease in that survival
situation. So you have to make some real decisions in choosing the best form of
backup communication your family uses. If you have a large budget then you can
have a SAT phone in every bag. If you’re like me, I am still working on my first
SAT phone. But I will do a review on them as soon as I purchase mine and it will
be epic.

[SURVIVAL TIP #5] STAY CALM! THINK YOUR WAY THROUGH ONE SITUATION AT A TIME.

Don’t be this guy

“Our minds get tired and they overload in stressful situations”

Staying calm in emergency situations can be the difference between survival and
not surviving. So many times we overlook the simple things that were right there
and could have saved the day or possibly saved a life. But because they were
overtaken by emotion and where not able to think clearly the missed the easy
fix.

We all have experienced this in some way. Usually, it manifests itself in the
form of us getting frustrated while doing a certain task over and over again
only to continually struggle and fail. So we walk away from that task and take a
break. Usually, we go have lunch and a beer…… I meant soda. Then when we come
back refreshed mentally and emotionally and attempt the task again. Usually, we
find the same task that we had been working on for an hour just took me 5 min
to complete. This happens because our minds to get tired and the do overload.

This happens because [our minds get tired and they overload in stressful
situations]. By keeping ourselves calm in these high-stress situations we are
keeping our mind from overloading. We will be able to think clearly and
increasing your odds of survival exponentially. Some good survival tips for this
is to take 3 seconds to breathe and assess the situation. Then take another deep
breath, exhale then start taking control of the emergency situation that is in
front of you.
