INTRODUCING THE SEMIANNUAL RELEASE PROCESS FOR TANIUM APPLIANCE AND ON-PREMISES

Traditionally, Tanium has issued updates weekly for customers with appliances
and on-premises installations. While this approach provided access to the latest
features and fixes, it also demanded continuous planning and deployment efforts
from our customers. Recognizing the challenges associated with this frequency,
we solicited customer feedback and found a desire for a more predictable update
cadence.
THE SEMIANNUAL RELEASE PROCESS
Starting in May 2024 with the 2024H1 release, we will package updates for server
components, modules, endpoint components, and Tanium Appliances into two major
releases annually. Semiannual releases are planned for the first half (H1) and
second half (H2) each year. Releases will include updates and new capabilities
previously delivered to Tanium Cloud. Each semiannual release will be supported
for 18 months during which it will receive security and fix patch updates as
needed .
Semiannual release bundles will include:
* Tanium Server
* Tanium Client
* Modules and Solutions
* Endpoint Tooling
* TanOS
BENEFITS OF THE SEMIANNUAL RELEASE PROCESS
* Streamlined Deployment: The bundled release format includes all solutions and
components installed as a whole, simplifying the update process and enabling
a single comprehensive update.
* Support Lifecycle and Stability: Each release bundle will receive support for
18 months, with security fixes and updates provided as necessary throughout
the lifecycle of each bundle.
* Customer Control: Recognizing the importance of scheduling and change
management, customers have a regular dependable release cadence to plan for.
Customers can choose to deploy the semiannual release immediately or defer
the upgrade to a more convenient time.
2024H1 MAY RELEASE
The first semiannual release 2024H1 is scheduled for May 2024 . It will include
significant improvements to the underlying platform, a revised Console, and
introduce Endpoint Change Management for controlled progressive deployment of
Client updates.
* Redesigned and refined Question Result processing on both the Client and
Server, resulting in up to 3X faster performance when using 7.6 Clients.
* An overhauled and streamlined Console user interface with Quick Search and
easier menu navigation.
* The first semiannual release bundle will introduce Endpoint Change Management
(ECM) to facilitate customer directed progressive deployment of client
updates across the environment.
Customers can upgrade from 7.4 or 7.5 Platform versions to the 2024 H1 release.
It is recommended to upgrade all modules and solutions to the latest published
7.4 or 7.5 versions prior to moving to the semiannual release.
FAQS FOR THE SEMIANNUAL RELEASE PROCESS
GENERAL QUESTIONS
Question Answer What is the semiannual release process? The semiannual release
process is Tanium's new approach to delivering feature updates for our
on-premises software, consolidating updates into two major releases each year.
When will the semiannual releases occur? Semiannual releases are scheduled for
May and November each year. The first of these releases will be in May 2024.
What components are included in a release bundle? Each release bundle will
include the Tanium Server, Tanium Client, all modules, and TanOS. The initial
bundle will also introduce Endpoint Change Management (ECM) to help manage
deployments more systematically. Can I skip a bundle release? Yes, customers may
choose to upgrade annually. Upgrading from the N-1 or N-2 release to the most
current release is supported. How will Tanium communicate updates and changes
related to the semiannual release process? Customers will be notified via email,
and updates will be provided through our Tanium Resource Center site.
TECHNICAL AND SUPPORT QUESTIONS
Question Answer How will the new model affect support for Tanium products? Each
release bundle and its components will be supported for 18 months, with security
fixes and updates provided as necessary. This ensures that customers have ample
time to plan and execute upgrades at their convenience. What is Endpoint Change
Management (ECM), and how does it affect me? ECM is a feature included in the
2024H1 release to allow controlled progressive rollout of Tanium endpoints
tools. Will there be any changes to how Tanium Cloud releases are handled?
Tanium Cloud will continue to receive frequent releases independent of the
semiannual release cycle for on-premises deployments, ensuring that cloud
customers have immediate access to the latest features and improvements. How do
I upgrade to the semiannual bundle? Customers can upgrade from their 7.4 and 7.5
Tanium Server instances to the 2024H1 bundle. Before upgrading to the semiannual
release, it is recommended to upgrade to the latest version of all solutions
available. How will versions 7.4 and 7.5 be supported under the new model?
Versions 7.4 and 7.5 will transition to maintenance. After May 1st, these
versions will only receive patches for bug fixes and security updates as
necessary. New features and capabilities will be delivered in the 2024H1 and
subsequent semiannual releases. Will I need to be at certain module versions
before upgrading to the bundle? It's strongly advised to upgrade your modules
before transitioning to the semiannual release. This will ensure a smooth
transition into the semiannual release program.
