UK GREATER MANCHESTER POLICE DISCLOSED A DATA BREACH

Pierluigi Paganini September 14, 2023

UK GREATER MANCHESTER POLICE (GMP) DISCLOSED A DATA BREACH, THREAT ACTORS HAD
ACCESS TO SOME OF ITS EMPLOYEES’ PERSONAL INFORMATION.

UK Greater Manchester Police (GMP) announced that threat actors had access to
the personal information of some of its employees after an unnamed third-party
supplier was hit with a ransomware attack.

The GMP reported that the impacted company provides its services to various UK
organizations, including Greater Manchester Police.

According to the statement published by the police, exposed data don’t include
financial information.

“We are aware of a ransomware attack affecting a third-party supplier of various
UK organisations, including GMP, which holds some information on those employed
by GMP,” ACC Colin McFarlane of Greater Manchester Police (GMP) said. “.At this
stage, it’s not believed this data includes financial information.”

The authorities are investigating into the incident and already notified the
Information Commissioners Office.

“We understand how concerning this is for our employees so, as we work to
understand any impact on GMP, we have contacted the Information Commissioners
Office and are doing everything we can to ensure employees are kept informed,
their questions are answered, and they feel supported,” McFarlane added.

In August, another security incident impacted a Police body in the United
Kingdom.

The Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI) has mistakenly shared sensitive
data of all 10,000 serving police officers in response to a Freedom of
Information (FOI) request. The request aimed at determining the numbers of PSNI
officers
