HONG KONG ‘HELLOS’ MEGA-EVENTS AS IT BUILDS ON LUXURY SHOPPING SUCCESS

25 Oct 2024

 * Nick Galanides, Special Correspondent, Hong Kong

Looking beyond being a prime retail destination, Hong Kong is proactively
re-inventing itself as a leading regional hub for mega-events.

Will more people ‘hello’ Hong Kong on the way to Coldplay or a cup tie?

While still perceived as a key luxury shopping destination, Hong Kong is looking
at additional ways to attract tourist dollars, with hosting mega‑events seen as
a particularly promising option. These could include high‑profile, high‑prestige
concerts featuring global superstars, world‑class sporting fixtures, top‑quality
cultural events, and more.

Christine Li, Head of Research for Asia‑Pacific at real estate consultants
Knight Frank, outlined this change in emphasis, saying: “The focus is shifting
from just selling luxury items to creating engaging and memorable shopping
experiences that resonate with a broader range of consumers.”

To support this transformation, the city has launched a new advertising
campaign, Hello Hong Kong, which focuses less on high‑end retail therapy and
much more on the visitor experience and culinary delights. The Hong Kong Tourism
Board (HKTB) calculates that its all‑singing, all‑dancing promo videos have been
uploaded to 3,000 platforms worldwide, already reaching an audience of more than
200 million.

Hopes for hospitality

The main beneficiaries of this planned transformation – initially at least – are
expected to be the hospitality and catering sectors. Hotel occupancy in 2025,
for example, is forecast to increase by about 4‑6% over the current year.

Kevin Yeung, Secretary for Culture, Sports and Tourism, explained how this will
ripple out across other business sectors, saying: “To fully exploit the
stimulating effect of tourism on various sectors, we will strengthen our liaison
with industries related to mega‑events, so that these events can attract more
tourists and generate more business opportunities.

“Cross‑sector promotion and tourism products can connect different sectors and
events. This will create comprehensive and immersive travel experiences for
tourists, making them the best ambassadors to tell good stories about Hong
Kong.”

Prestigious high‑end attractions, trade exhibitions and business conventions
will remain important in Hong Kong’s overall proposition to visitors, but hotels
and the hospitality industry are also now partnering with mega‑event providers
to create bespoke travel packages that encompass accommodation, dining and
pre‑and‑post‑event activities.

Wider impacts

A deliberate drive to embrace high‑profile cultural, sports and entertainment
events is calculated to increase visitors’ length of stay in Hong Kong, which
should mean extra spending across intersectional industries. It is hoped that
this “push to attract” strategy will “pull” other sectors along, with increased
business prospects rippling out beyond hotels, bars and restaurants.

Confirming the idea that large‑scale prestigious events can spread positive
impacts beyond the hospitality sectors, Yong Chen, an Associate Professor at the
EHL Hospitality Business School in Switzerland, said: “The hosting of
mega‑events also has an indirect effect on other industries. For example,
upstream industries in Hong Kong, such as manufacturing, wholesaling,
consultancy and financial services, may benefit from suppliers and organisers
who need to purchase goods and services.”
