LATE GHANAIAN JOURNALIST KOMLA DUMOR HONOURED BY GUBA

HONOURED: Komla Dumor

Eldest daughter revealed BBC broadcaster did not fear death but ‘not making a
difference’

THE LATE BBC journalist Komla Dumor was honoured posthumously at a glamorous
ceremony celebrating some of Ghana’s most outstanding citizens.

Dumor was awarded the GUBA (Ghana UK-based Achievements) Black Award for special
achievement having built a successful career that made him one of the BBC’s most
recognisable faces.

The much-loved broadcaster, who died suddenly at the age of 41 in 2014,
presented the World Service’s Africa Business Report and Focus on Africa
programme.

In 2013, Dumor was named one of the continent’s most influential Africans.

His widow Kwansema and their eldest daughter, Elinam, collected the award on
Saturday, July 4, from his former colleague Solomon Mugera and Conservative MP
Kwasi Kwarteng.

Mugera said: “I’m here because of a very special person: one of our very own, a
talent born, bred and polished in Africa. This is a man who became the voice and
face of Africa on the international stage.

“I am here because I want to glorify his legacy. I want to thank GUBA for the
respect, honour and love they have shown for Komla Afeke Dumor.”

Paying tribute to his colleague’s skills as a journalist, Mugera continued:
“Komla would be at a palace or state house and hug a president and then go to a
slum area and hug a street child. He knew that between those ranks and those
dressed to the nines there is one common thing called humanity.”

His wife Kwansema said it was a “privilege and an honour” to collect the award.
She added: “He was passionate about his work and about using his voice to inform
to educate and highlight pertinent issues.”

Dumor’s daughter added: “One poignant thing Daddy used to say was, ‘I don’t fear
death. It comes to us all. I fear not making a difference’. Although he is gone,
we are glad his achievements have been recognised.”
