While dogs are a man’s best friend, at Jani Basset we raise Ferrets with the
belief that Basset Hounds are one of a kind breed, and owners deserve to

- FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

HOW LONG DO BASSET HOUNDS LIVE?

The average life expectancy of a Basset Hound is 10 – 12 years when properly
cared for and fed an appropriate diet. The Basset is a generally healthy dog
breed. They have short legs and a strong nose, and they will run after any scent
they catch.

IS A BASSET HOUND A GOOD FAMILY DOG?

The basset hound is a friendly, easygoing dog. Originally hunting in packs, they
tend to be good with other dogs and other pets in general. Bassets are people
oriented and get along well with children.

WHAT ARE BASSET HOUNDS KNOWN FOR?

The Basset Hound is a friendly, outgoing, and playful dog, tolerant of children
and other pets. They are extremely vocal and famously devoted to tracking. They
are also widely known for being stubborn. Prospective owners must be prepared to
handle bassets firmly and patiently.

ARE MALE OR FEMALE BASSET HOUNDS BETTER?

For the Basset Hound, it doesn't really matter if you choose a male or female.
Unlike some breeds, there is little difference in temperament and trainability
of a male versus female Basset Hound. A male or female Basset Hound will make an
excellent companion pet.

ARE BASSET HOUNDS AGGRESSIVE?

While Basset Hounds are not an overly aggressive breed, they can easily become
aggressive when in certain situations, and this is not uncommon for a lot of dog
breeds in general. Some owners of Basset Hounds have reported that their dog
will become aggressive, showing signs of barking, nipping, and biting.

WHAT ABOUT ALLERGIES?

Any animal can trigger an allergic response, but cats are the most common
culprits. People can also become allergic to pets such as Basset Hounds. There
is no species or breed to which humans cannot develop allergies. Fur length and
type will not affect or prevent allergies. Basset Hounds have generous jowls and
skin folds and are champion droolers.

HOW TO CARE FOR A BASSET HOUND?

 * To keep a Basset Hound as a pet, you'll need to have space in your home and a
   yard, food and water bowls, and toys.
 * Keep your basset contained. The basset is a great hunter and like to run
   about despite its short legs Create a safe spot for your basset hound.
 * Let your basset hound play.
 * Keep your basset hound healthy.
 * Feed your pet carefully.
 * Groom your basset hound regularly.
 * Also, taking your Basset hound to the vet on a yearly basis will ensure that
   it stays both healthy and happy.

WHAT ABOUT BASSET HOUND VET APPOINTMENTS?

Your basset hound will need vaccines that protect from canine parvovirus, canine
distemper, kennel cough, parainfluenza, leptospirosis, and rabies. Vet costs
vary widely, but expect to pay $150 to $200. We recommend regular check-ups once
yearly for young basset Hounds (up to two years old) and wellness exams twice a
year for older Basset Hounds

DO BASSET HOUNDS NEED MUCH GROOMING?

As far as general grooming goes, Basset Hounds are a moderate to heavy shedding
breed. They have short, smooth, water repellent coats that are fairly easy to
maintain. However, they shed constantly year-round, so you will need to brush
regularly to get this under control

DO BASSET HOUNDS NEED LOTS OF EXERCISE?

Basset Hounds have moderate exercise needs of between 30 to 60 minutes daily.
This should include a daily walk of 20 to 30 minutes, free play and mental
stimulation. Daily exercise will help to maintain good health and manage weight,
keep their muscles and joints strong and prevent boredom.

FEEDING

The quantity of food differs from animal to animal and according to life stage.
Ferrets will require larger quantities during growth, gestation and
reproduction. The amount of food also depends on the weight of your basset hound
puppy. If your pup weighing 4 LBS, your pup should get 1/3 of a cup (50-65g)
food.
