PANA-THINAIKOS-VISION

Details Created: Sunday, 24 November 2024 17:16 Written by Christopher Morley

Following the untimely passing of Greek international and Panathinaikos defender
George Baldock, after just three appearances for his new club since a free
transfer to the Spyros Louis stadium from Sheffield United, it's worth asking
where this leaves the Trifylli (Shamrock), traditionally one of the Super
League's powerhouses alongside rivals Olympiakos.

A tribute was movingly paid before the October Nations League clash between the
land of his grandmother and that of his birth, having earned twelve caps since
his 2022 début after choosing to go down the route of playing for granny's home
country.

A NEW DAWN OF THE DONS?

 *

Details Created: Wednesday, 16 October 2024 21:46 Written by Christopher Morley

It has been twenty years as the object of scorn for both fans of the former
Wimbledon and those from other clubs vehement in their opposition to both the
chain of events that led to their formation and the club which emerged. Those
who welcomed the newly rechristened Milton Keynes Dons into being and indeed the
Football League, as part of an attempt to rejuvenate their new catchment area,
must have cause to reflect on how far- or not- they've come since June 21, 2004.

SVEN IN ROME

Details Created: Monday, 07 October 2024 14:49 Written by Christopher Morley

In the days after the sad passing of former England manager, Sven-Göran
Eriksson, relatively few of the many articles penned zeroed in on his impact in
Serie A and how Italy became something of an adopted homeland for him. And
perhaps nowhere was that impact felt more keenly than the sky blue side of Rome,
after he went back on his word to Blackburn and decided he'd rather not sample
the delights of Lancashire after leaving Sampdoria.

OLYMPIQUE FRANCAIS (FOR THE OLYMPIC FOOTBALL)

 *

Details Created: Friday, 06 September 2024 01:11 Written by Christopher Morley

As Paris handed the Olympic torch over to Los Angeles for the 2028 Games, debate
continued as to whether football should continue to have a place in its
pantheon. France's men, under Thierry Henry, took the silver medal following an
extra-time defeat by Spain and could probably be judged the apex of the French
government's recent high value investment in top-level sport, starting with
winning the bid to host last year's Rugby World Cup.

THE COPA RUNNETH OVER

Details Created: Thursday, 08 August 2024 11:44 Written by Christopher Morley

There is a sense, in the aftermath of this year's Copa America, a sense that all
was not well with the venerable festival of South American football, hosted by
the USA for a second time following on from the Copa America Centenario in 2016
(a special edition in marking the tournament's centenary as well as that of
CONMEBOL itself- as well as the first one played on non-native soil thanks to an
agreement with CONCACAF).
