$165-MILLION FOR MCGILL UNIVERSITY’S WORLD-LEADING INCLUSIVE GENOMICS AND RNA
RESEARCH PROGRAM 

The Government of Canada awards McGill the largest research grant in the
University’s history to create an international hub for “next generation”
medicines

The Honourable François-Philippe Champagne, Minister of Innovation, Science and
Industry, announced $1.4 billion in support of 11 large-scale research
initiatives through the Canada First Research Excellence Fund (CFREF) today at
Concordia University in Montreal. The CFREF grants are awarded through a highly
competitive process to the top programs in their fields.

McGill is the recipient of a landmark $165 million CFREF grant to launch DNA to
RNA: An Inclusive Canadian Approach to Genomic-based RNA Therapeutics (D2R), a
first-of-its-kind global research effort specializing in the development and
delivery of more inclusive genomic-based RNA therapeutics. D2R will receive
significant support from more than 50 partners, including many from academia and
industry, who have all pledged to invest in the research, which brings the total
amount invested in D2R to $353 million.

Canadian academic partnering institutions include the University of Ottawa, the
University of British Columbia (UBC), McMaster University and l’Université de
Sherbrooke.

“McGill’s commitments to RNA and genomics sciences over several decades have
built a critical mass of researchers and exceptional facilities to lead the RNA
therapeutics revolution,” says Martha Crago, Vice-Principal, Research and
Innovation. “This significant research investment will open a new frontier in
the treatment of diseases and disorders.”

“McGill is grateful to the Government of Canada and an impressive group of
global partners for their support of this world-leading, inclusive program of
research excellence and innovation,” says Deep Saini, Principal and
Vice-Chancellor of McGill.


THE RNA REVOLUTION 

The remarkable and rapid success of mRNA vaccines against SARS-CoV-2
demonstrated the power of combining genomics with RNA technology. RNA
therapeutics can be developed and produced much more quickly than traditional
small molecule drugs, which can take years to discover and cost billions to
produce.

D2R-led research has the potential to provide breakthrough treatments for a wide
spectrum of diseases, such as those caused by emerging viruses that threaten our
society with pandemics, rare genetic disorders that are incurable or
prohibitively expensive to treat, and cancer, which is the number one cause of
death in Canada.

“To treat complex conditions and their associated catastrophic health and
economic consequences more effectively, we need to work across sectors and with
an engaged group of partners,” says Mark Lathrop, Scientific Director of the
McGill Genome Centre, and the Scientific Director of D2R. “D2R is creating a
nexus for genomics and RNA research and demonstrating leadership in the
implementation of inclusive social and regulatory policies to address global
health needs.” 


AN INCLUSIVE APPROACH  

The team of seventy researchers from five academic institutions, will work
collaboratively with Canada’s Indigenous and immigrant populations, including
with the partnering Network Environments for Indigenous Health Research (NEIHR),
to ensure the promise of RNA therapeutics is made widely available in a manner
that is inclusive and beneficial to all Canadians.

Training of students and postdocs and support for early career researchers are
core priorities of D2R, as is interdisciplinary work among researchers in AI,
data science and RNA therapeutics, RNA biology, social sciences, law, ethics,
and Indigenous heath.

“The D2R Initiative will develop safe and effective therapies, focus on creating
more inclusive genomic datasets, and work to break down historical barriers to
medicines and care through close partnership with equity-deserving communities,”
says Amélie Quesnel-Vallée, Canada Research Chair in Policies and Health
Inequalities, Inaugural Chair of the Department of Equity, Ethics and Policy at
McGill, and D2R’s Co-Scientific Director.  


EXCELLENCE SPANNING DECADES AND INSTITUTIONS  

The D2R Initiative builds on McGill’s 50-year history in RNA discovery and
innovation. This includes researchers such as Prof. Nahum Sonenberg who in 1976
first identified the cap-binding protein eIF4E, a key component in RNA’s ability
to regulate the replication of cells. Also, a member of the D2R team is
University of British Columbia’s Dr. Pieter Cullis, whose work in lipid
nanoparticles was an essential precursor to the later development of mRNA
vaccines.

Several Fortune 500 pharmaceutical companies are engaged with D2R. Eight
additional academic partners, including five international partners, have also
joined forces on this initiative.

165 MILLIONS POUR UN PROGRAMME DE RECHERCHE INCLUSIF DE CLASSE MONDIALE SUR LA
GÉNOMIQUE ET L’ARN 

Le gouvernement du Canada accorde à l’Université McGill une subvention d’une
ampleur inédite pour la création d’une plateforme internationale de traitements
novateurs. 



L’Honourable François-Philippe Champagne, Ministre de l’Innovation, des Sciences
et de l’Industrie, a annoncé aujourd’hui à l’Université Concordia (Montréal) un
investissement de 1,4 milliard de dollars pour soutenir 11 initiatives de
recherche à grande échelle dans le cadre du Fonds d’excellence en recherche
Apogée Canada (fonds Apogée). Les subventions du fonds Apogée sont attribuées
aux meilleurs programmes d’un domaine à la suite d’un processus hautement
concurrentiel.

McGill recevra un financement majeur de 165 millions de dollars du fonds Apogée
pour lancer le projet De l’ADN à l’ARN : une approche canadienne inclusive des
traitements génomiques à base d’ARN (D2R), une initiative de recherche unique en
son genre qui vise au développement de nouveaux traitements à base d’ARN plus
inclusifs. Le programme recevra un soutien important de plus de 50 partenaires,
dont bon nombre proviennent du milieu universitaire et du secteur privé et dont
la contribution promise amènera l’investissement total à 353 millions de
dollars.

Parmi les établissements partenaires canadiens, on peut compter l’Université
d’Ottawa, l’Université de la Colombie-Britannique, l’Université McMaster et
l’Université de Sherbrooke.

« McGill œuvre en génomique et en ARN depuis plusieurs décennies; cela lui a
permis de se donner une masse critique de scientifiques et des installations
exceptionnelles pour révolutionner les thérapies à ARN, affirme Martha Crago,
vice-principale à la recherche et à l’innovation. « Cet important investissement
dans la recherche ouvrira une nouvelle frontière dans le traitement des maladies
humaines. »

LA RÉVOLUTION DE L’ARN  

L’efficacité remarquable et rapide des vaccins à ARNm contre le SRAS-CoV-2 a
démontré le potentiel de la génomique combinée à la technologie à ARN. Les
traitements à ARN peuvent être mis au point et produits beaucoup plus vite que
les classiques médicaments à petites molécules, dont la découverte demande des
années de travail et les coûts de production se chiffrent en milliards de
dollars.

La recherche en D2R pourrait donner lieu à des traitements révolutionnaires pour
tout un éventail de maladies, dont celles causées par des virus émergents qui
menacent de causer des pandémies, des troubles génétiques rares et incurables ou
au traitement ruineux, ou des cancers – la première cause de décès au pays.

« Pour traiter plus efficacement des problèmes de santé complexes et leurs
conséquences sanitaires et économiques, nous devons décompartimenter la
recherche et travailler avec un groupe de partenaires engagés », explique Mark
Lathrop, directeur scientifique du Centre d’innovation Génome Québec et
Université McGill et directeur scientifique de D2R. « En plus de créer un pôle
de recherche sur la génomique et l’ARN, le programme D2R donne l’exemple en
matière d’application de politiques sociales et réglementaires inclusives pour
répondre aux besoins en santé dans le monde. » 


UNE APPROCHE INCLUSIVE 

L’équipe de 70 chercheuses et chercheurs de cinq établissements travaillera en
collaboration avec les populations autochtones et immigrantes du pays, dont son
partenaire Environnement réseau pour la recherche sur la santé des Autochtones
(ERRSA), pour offrir les prometteurs traitements à ARN de manière inclusive et
avantageuse à tout le Canada.

Parmi ses grandes priorités, le projet D2R compte la formation des étudiantes,
étudiants et stagiaires postdoctoraux et le soutien aux chercheuses et
chercheurs en début de carrière; il mise aussi sur l’interdisciplinarité en
réunissant des scientifiques de l’IA, de la science des données, des traitements
à ARN, de la biologie de l’ARN, des sciences sociales, du droit, de l’éthique et
de la santé autochtone.

« L’initiative D2R mettra au point des traitements sûrs et efficaces, visera la
création d’ensembles de données génomiques plus inclusifs, et cherchera à
aplanir les obstacles historiques à l’administration de soins et de traitements
grâce à un partenariat étroit avec les communautés en quête d’équité, explique
Amélie Quesnel-Vallée, titulaire de la Chaire de recherche du Canada en
politiques et inégalités sociales de santé, première directrice du Département
d’équité, d’éthique et de politiques de McGill et codirectrice scientifique de
D2R. 


L’EXCELLENCE À TRAVERS LES ÂGES ET LES ÉTABLISSEMENTS 

L’initiative D2R table sur cinquante années de découvertes et d’innovation sur
l’ARN à l’Université McGill. C’est notamment le fait de scientifiques comme
Prof. Nahum Sonenberg, qui a découvert en 1976 la protéine eIF4E, qui se lie à
la coiffe de l’ARNm et constitue l’une des clés de la capacité de l’ARN à
réguler la réplication des cellules. Pensons également à l’un des membres de
l’équipe D2R, Pieter Cullis (Université de la Colombie-Britannique), dont les
travaux sur les nanoparticules lipidiques ont joué un rôle essentiel dans
l’avènement des vaccins à ARNm.

Plusieurs pharmaceutiques du classement Fortune 500 se sont aussi engagées à
soutenir D2R. Huit autres partenaires universitaires, donc cinq à l’étranger, se
sont aussi joints à l’initiative.
