LET’S CELEBRATE!

LET’S CELEBRATE!

“You are where you are today because you stand on somebody's shoulders. And
wherever you are heading, you cannot get there by yourself. If you stand on the
shoulders of others, you have a reciprocal responsibility to live your life so
that others may stand on your shoulders. It's the quid pro quo of life. We exist
temporarily through what we take, but we live forever through what we give.”

- Vernon Jordan, American business executive and civil rights activist

It’s one thing to acknowledge Black History Month and quite another to celebrate
it. If you’re looking for ways to honor Black History Month in your life and
workplace, start here:

Purchase a book written by a Black author. It could be a business book, memoir,
biography, novel, or even a children’s story. Here’s a list with genres ranging
from short story collections to sci-fi, recommended by TED speakers.

Shop from Black business owners. Get your next shipment of supplies or gifts at
Black-owned businesses either in your area or online. Amazon, for example,
highlights its Black-owned businesses in a special section of its online
platform. Check it out here.

Donate or volunteer. Black History Month is not only about celebrating, it’s
also a time to acknowledge the work that still needs to be done. As a team or
independently, consider making a donation to or volunteering at one of the many
reputable organizations dedicated to furthering Black causes.

Expand your entertainment. Yes, this is your permission slip to go see that new
show or listen to that new band. Watch TV shows with a cast of characters who
are very different than you. See a movie set in a place you’ve never visited.
Entertainment is a great place to find new voices and perspectives (and kick
back a little at the same time, too).

Reflect: What can your team do today to truly support and celebrate Black
History Month, not just in word, but in deed? How can you be the spark that
starts this celebration off on the right foot? What can you actively do right
now to plan?
