Michael J. Kruger (PhD, University of Edinburgh) is President and the Samuel C.
Patterson Professor of New Testament at Reformed Theological Seminary,
Charlotte, NC, and the author of a number of books and articles on early
Christianity. He is one of the leading scholars today in the study of the
origins of the New Testament, particularly the development of the New Testament
canon and the transmission of the New Testament text. He is the author of
numerous books including The Gospel of the Savior (Brill, 2005), The Heresy of
Orthodoxy (Crossway, 2010, with Andreas Köstenberger), Canon Revisited
(Crossway, 2012), and The Question of Canon (IVP, 2013). He is also the editor
of A Biblical-Theological Introduction to the New Testament (Crossway, 2016),
and co-editor of The Early Text of the New Testament (Oxford, 2012), and Gospel
Fragments (Oxford, 2009).

Incredibly Healing and Helpful; A Must Read for All Christians
Bully Pulpit is the latest book by author, blogger, and seminary president and
professor, Michael J. Kruger. This book's focus is spiritual abuse and while
Bully Pulpit is easy to comprehend but the anecdotes included in its pages
aren't necessarily easy to read. I do believe that if you've encountered
spiritual abuse, you will be encouraged by this book. There were many times in
the book when Dr. Kruger included scenarios of spiritual abuse and it was
validating to see him acknowledge these instances as sinful.Upon examining the
origins of spiritual abuse on page 44, Dr. Kruger gave readers an overview of
Genesis 3 and sin's origins. It shocked me to read that because of the fall, ".
. . husbands would need to guard against sinfully dominating their wives. . . "
This page also mentioned how sin breaks other relationships which leads to
spiritual and other types of abuse. However, this line about husbands sinfully
dominating their wives is one that I highlighted and went back to reread
multiple times to make sure I was reading correctly. I've struggled with
complementarian ideals because of the way passages like this are taught.I've
never heard it taught that men have to be on guard against sinfully dominating
their wives – I have been taught many times however, that women have a desire to
usurp the "authority" of their husbands (authority is in quotes since the Bible
does not use this word in reference to marriage.) Genesis 3's reference to a
woman's desire to rule over her husband comes from a Hebrew term that is very
difficult to translate. Even commentators and theologians have not reached a
firm consensus about how to translate it, [1] so it was incredibly refreshing to
see Dr. Kruger give an objective look at the passage. His godly tenderness
toward women is so apparent in Bully Pulpit.Another way Dr. Kruger did this so
well in Bully Pulpit is by encouraging leadership teams that consist solely or
primarily of men to include women's voices in various church processes.
Regarding this, he wrote, "One way to add independent, outside voices to the
leadership structure is to invite women to participate. As already noted, women
typically have very different perspectives on the church than men, and their
voices aren't always heard. . . " (pg. 121).Although spiritual abuse is a
particularly discouraging topic, this book actually left me feeling hopeful and
encouraged because Dr. Kruger faithfully reminds readers of who God is and how
He loves His people. The chapter of the book that was most impactful to me was
its conclusion. Dr. Kruger began this section by including a brief account of a
pastor he knew who stated his primary ministry goal was to look for people's sin
and confront them about it.He explained, ". . . that's not the primary calling
of a shepherd. The job of the shepherd is to care for the sheep, and this
includes feeding them, protecting them, encouraging them, binding up their
wounds, and yes, correcting them when needed. But anyone who makes correction
and discipline the main thing is on the pathway to being an abusive pastor,"
(pg. 44).Dr. Kruger said ministering in this way, ". . . creates a culture of
fault-finding where the pastor and his enablers are on a quest to discover
everybody's sin patterns. Rather than thinking the best of others—'Love . . .
hopes all things' (1 Cor. 13:7)—the pastor has an attitude of suspicion and
judgment. Church members under oppressive leadership feel watched, beaten down,
and criticized. They live in fear of making a mistake or stepping out of line,"
(pg. 140).A stark contrast is found in the way Jesus cares for His sheep.
Regarding this, Dr. Kruger wrote " . . . chances are your flock needs a
compassionate pat on the back much more than it needs a swift kick in the pants.
People in the church are hurting and discouraged and need someone to walk
alongside them. In Psalm 23, the consummate psalm on God as our Shepherd, the
focus is overwhelmingly on provision, protection, and comfort. Instead of a
ministry of fault-finding, which can lead to abuse, we ought to pursue a
ministry of encouragement and care, looking for the best in others rather than
the worst," (pg. 141).Bully Pulpit is a helpful read and if you're hoping for
healing after spiritual abuse and/or hoping to help prevent it, I highly
recommend purchasing a copy.FOOTNOTES[1] I'm grateful to Kendra Dahl for her
wise, charitable, and faithful examination of this text in her article,
Restoring Eve. While I don't agree with everything in the article, particularly
the use of the term "headship," I found the article incredibly helpful.Headship
is not a biblical term - many use it as a way to apply Paul's metaphor for a
husband being the head of his wife in Ephesians 5:22. It is important to note
however, that when Paul mentions a head, he also mentions a body. This begs the
question, is body-ship a thing? And if so, what does it entail? The Bible
doesn't use the term headship and it doesn't spell out what headship looks like
or includes, which is why I'm not a fan of the term.

From 1970-1984 I was the recipient of what this author refers to as “spiritual
abuse in the church.” Since then, I have been in recovery and have helped many
heal from their own unique experience of abuse by those in religious authority.
Both my graduate degrees focused specifically on this topic and my first
published book was about how religious abuse recovery occurs.
Like many, I can appreciate what it feels like to have experienced such abuse.
Therefore, when a seasoned conservative Christian seminary president and
professor tags segments of the Christian church for such abuses, I take notice.
When he also gives concrete preventative and corrective actions to such abuse, I
want to do all I can to promote his ideas as found in his excellent book.
Just who is he writing for, what does he say and how does he say it?
Briefly - he writes as an insider primarily to those on the inside of the
Christian community and to those that are perhaps now outside of the church due
to abuse experienced by the actions of church leadership. He intentionally
identifies and illustrates such abuse providing noteworthy examples: James
MacDonald, Harvest Bible Chapel; Liberty president Jerry Falwell Jr. and Steve
Timmis previous CEO of Acts 29 along with others. He does not try to pretend
that because a church proports to be “Christian” that therefore they are above
reproach and themselves not in need of correction. He makes a winsome case for a
well-informed biblical approach that rightfully suggests how both the Old and
New Testaments of the Bible are very critical of abuse by religious leaders.
The author does not stop at merely identifying such abuse by clergy but provides
a straightforward three-pronged action driven approach for churches. There are
preventative measures to help ensure abuse is rare, there needs to be an
accountability structure to sufficiently deal with it when it does occur, and
the church needs to have a well-organized plan of how to protect and care for
those that may yet be abused.
I appreciated how the author writes in a very readable, well-organized sort of
way. He rightful appeals to various authorities in the field of religious abuse:
Lisa Oakley, Kathryn Kinmond, David Johnson, Jeff VanVonderen, and Kenneth J.
Garrett along with many others. He also weaves in helpful information from
authors Bessel van der Kolk (trauma expert); Chuck DeGroat (narcissism as found
in the church); and appropriate creative quotes from J.R.R. Tolkien (Lord of the
Rings and the Hobbit) and C.S. Lewis (the Chronicles of Narnia) and a host of
others from history past. If all the above was not enough, his extensive notes
of documentation at the end of his book were additionally well-chosen and
helpful for those wanting to do more research on this important topic.
Clearly this author is well-read, on this topic he has done his homework, he is
brave in expressing his opinions and does so in a creative and very helpful sort
of way. It is no wonder that his book is getting a lot of recognition. There
isn’t a six-star evaluation, otherwise I would gladly give it.

Kruger has a gift for summarizing a lot of research into succinct writing that
never feels uselessly repetitive. Paragraph after paragraph contain insight
after insight into the state of the church at this time in history, specifically
the culture of celebrity and authoritarianism that provide a context for abuse
and mistreatment.
I think the greatest contribution of this book is recognizing the overall
culture of churches which encourage and tolerate abuse (even unwittingly) rather
than focusing solely on abusive leaders. It truly takes a village to abuse a
church member and Kruger makes this point in various ways.
I think what may be missing from this book is a more sober reckoning with what
it would actually take to change the culture of authoritarian churches.
Attempting to change a top-down, hierarchical leadership structure, which both
members and leaders have bought into and perpetuated (sometimes for decades)
will probably be met with intense resistance in most churches. Because, as
Kruger DOES point out, it’s not just the leaders who are committed to it - the
congregation wanted these “kings” and their “kingdoms” too. I think “Church
Refugees” by Packard is a good companion to this book as it explores the
powerlessness of Christians to change specific church cultures.
Think about this as you read the book…but DEFINITELY buy and read this book!

Hands down the best book to date on church abuse. Kruger really deals with the
theological issues accurately and presents an incredible “you are that man”
argument. So much faulty theology taken apart. But, also the most hard hitting
and researched and footnoted summary of what happens, the tactics, and what
happens to the abused long term.
For those of you uncomfortable with the term church abuse - get over it. It’s
very real. This is a must read for every elder, deacon, seminary student,
pastor. As the abused and manipulated, 90% of what the author said was dead on
personally. You may not be going through it yourself, but this teaches how to
treat and handle those who are and what a leadership board needs to do when
accusations rise. It’s more that quit shooting your wounded.
For those of us who have lived it, Kruger is right - we will never be the same.
God will wipe away those tears and work for His glory. But there’s hope - God
can use us to slow and stop this for others. Kruger gives great thoughts on
this.

An excellent exposure of what happens when a culture of spiritual abuse becomes
the accepted way of running a church. Lack of accountability,secrecy over
decisions,isolation of those who speak up. The immense harm done and the
inability to deal with the abuser or those who support the abusive are reasons
to weep and repent. My heart goes out to every victim of leadership abuse and
sadly my experience has been the denial that it can ever happen in “our” church.
I hope more leaders read this book and reflect on their own ministry.

church leaders should read it.
Pity you can't get a paperback, and for lower price (i.e. it's not a cheap
book).

Great read for the leader and lay person alike.
If you have come through spiritual abuse in a church or ministry setting then
this book is an ideal read as it will let you see that the things that happened
really did happen and that you aren’t mad, bad or hell bound.
There are bad guys behind the pulpit.
