FURNITURE SCHOOL

Over the 30 years I have been running a successful bespoke furniture making and
antique restoration business, I have become passionate about passing on the
skills and knowledge through my Woodworking School.

We have designed a range of educational long and short courses that have
traditional hand skills at their core, the key requirement being simply
enthusiasm and a thirst for knowledge.

FURNITURE MAKING

Stunning individually designed furniture in a traditional or contemporary style.
Whether you have a definite design in mind or simply an idea, we can help you
realise your dreams.

We also specialise in making accurate copies of chairs and furniture to match
existing pieces or to complete a set.

Beautiful wooden coffee tables and bedside tables are often difficult to
source.  John has designed a range of unique furniture to fill this gap in the
market.

ANTIQUE FURNITURE RESTORATION

Antique furniture and cherished family heirlooms can be brought back to life
with sympathetic Antique Furniture Restoration. John Lloyd, an antique furniture
restorer with more than 25 years experience, and a full member of the British
Antique Furniture Restorer’s Association, will restore your antique furniture
with careful, thoughtful consideration.

We are also experts in mid-20th Century furniture restoration and conservation.
This increasingly popular and much sort after furniture requires particularly
specialist knowledge due to the more modern materials used, for example, cork
and laminates.

Offering a complete range of restoration services covering, both structural and
cosmetic repairs, your treasured items, which have perhaps been passed down
through your family, can be brought back into use and made to look lovely again.

An antique furniture restorer is just that, a ‘Restorer’, our main function is
to restore a piece of antique furniture back to its intended use, Chairs are
meant to be sat on without the occupant feeling that they might end up on the
floor at any minute, Extending Dining Tables are meant to extend without needing
to resort to a crow-bar, and when extended shouldn’t make you worry that your
soup might well end up in your lap at any moment, and library steps shouldn’t
put you in fear of your life should you dare to climb higher than the first
step.

WHAT OUR STUDENTS SAY.

> An excellent comprehensive programme which is both highly practical as well as
> theoretical.  I came away feeling confident about sharpening and tuning a wide
> range of woodworking tools

David Green

> An excellent course with every opportunity to ask a full range of questions.

James Townley

> Having not done anything like this before, I feel I learnt a great deal. From
> the first morning until the final hour new skills and techniques were being
> shown and valuable knowledge passed on. I enjoyed John’s thorough teaching
> approach and feel he probably covered more detail than anyone else could
> possibly fit into one week – things like; steel types, different kinds of oil,
> sharpening angles, blade steepness etc. All valuable info that I’d not really
> given much thought to previously. The workshop itself was a great place to be
> for the necessarily long days we spent there. Light and airy with plenty of
> good quality tools (and cake) to try. I also enjoyed looking around the other
> workshops a great deal. Seeing what everyone was up to was quite inspiring.

Giacomo Maltman

> Excellent course in all respects. With no prior experience in tool sharpening,
> I came away with the knowledge and confidence to fly solo. The skills were
> learned and will improve with future hard work and practice. Thanks John for a
> very enjoyable and worthwhile weekend, and to Sarah Jane for the delicious
> baked treats.

Rachel Kirby

> It was good to have so much hands-on time, and the (very) small group and
> relaxed environment meant we were able to have practical demonstration as an
> answer to many questions.

Sean Albuqueque

> I would just like to say a big thank you for the fantastic course that you ran
> last week, i can honestly say i haven’t learnt that much in years and along
> with that had such fun. You truly have an exceptional environment to learn and
> the camaraderie is second to none. Again many, many thanks and hopefully i
> will get myself along to the long course in the not to distant future.

Sean Foley

> This was an excellent choice of course for me as I work with hand tools, and I
> felt that my skills levels and knowledge had really been raised enormously
> after the week with John.

Dale Russell

> A superb course taught by John who is a excellent teacher and obviously
> extremely experienced. He made learning the basics of woodworking really fun
> and enjoyable. I learnt loads and feel so much more confident with the plane,
> saw and chisel. The supply of delicious cakes and biscuits also helped to keep
> energy levels up for the entire two days.

James Berge

> Well structured and comprehensively covered the subjects.Time well used with
> sensitive feel for the needs of the participants. I can’t imagine how it could
> be bettered within the time frame allowed.

David Benwell

> Having zero woodworking skills I amazed myself with what I achieved after only
> five days – all credit to John for his excellent teaching. The small class
> gives everyone lots of one to one time with John. I arrived with a piece of
> firewood and went home with a beautifully restored 19th century chair.
> Everything was spot on!

Nick White

> The course instruction was very clear, for a subject that was more complex
> than I expected. Well paced to allow plenty of time for questions and practice
> of the skills learned. I would most certainly recommend this course to
> prospective students.
