  ROT IN RIPENESS  The season , thatched with  wood smoke, rots.  Songbirds
could not weave  a dance Rot is the grain that the  tassel makes for. Laden with
impurity, wilted corns  stare as saddened ghosts Dreaming of the spruce  of
time  When Songbirds spliced their  wings in a weave of dance--- Eating through
the ripeness, the worms The tassel lazy by. Milky teeth are wreathed with brown
Need we detach the worms  from the panicle Black ants from the particles  Or
walk in a long-drawn dusk--- We listen, to the phrases of  the wind As dead
dreams scatter as  willow sliver We await the harves t  The harvest of decay.

  WOMAN OF THE RIVERBED (the poem is based on a woman whom the poet saw some
years ago at a particular river on a rock in southern Cameroon)   The rains have
come  Woman of the riverbank Earnest are the Kettledrums   The surf, boundless
in my mind I am the sunbeaten beach craving your wet fingers Your wet incisions
on my back  Like the drumsticks of  shuttlecocks--- Crowned with the moon, many
mirrors for your use Are you the river Nun? Many eons, spotted on that  marked
rock Legends have told  Your coarse outer hair, overlie  your thick underfur
Shooting arrows of lines Your verses on my mind--- Scary, many bethink of you 
Oh sea beaver But I am here, counting the  sunbeams in your eyes Cracking as
oliban at noontime--- I shall dream of the salt-emptiness Of the Igloo with
ungathered hairs from the depth  And of the ripples that kissed the  swaggering

  Mmenyene Orok  You are the poetry The undying muse  Wedlock of the pen  and
the book--- Mmenyene , slender as a plume  Bathed in a pot of  palm oil
Sanctuary of the sun, your hallowed bowel--- Destined, Oh most  pulchritudinous
goddess My heart beats for you  Like a timorous antelope  in a trap--- I'll
finger the beehive  Pluck grains from the  coffee tree A calabash of fresh wine 
to wash your feet A rivulet of poetry in a  pamphlet of cocoa leaves ---
Together, we journey as the river Our lives journey  Through the gateway of
yesterday  Uphill towards the mound of the moppet sun Searching for dawn---

  MY MOTHER  She stands, that palm tree   with many breasts In the break of day
And at the fall of night  The oil lamp in the dark  when shadows bestride on 
naked walls And on the baobab tree  There were many owls--- Eyeballs of the moon
  Piercing the dark gates  of woody climbers To harvest oysters in the  dank
jungle of the sea --- Many thorns have pierced her unshod sole In the foot march
of the  Forest . The snail disowned  the burden of its house  In protest of the
weight  The cobra desiccates its shuck, like a rag on a grove--- Many thorns
have pierced  her unshod sole  Many storms from the  armpit of dawn Wreathed
above the thatched  roof, a long-drawn shadow of woe Decaying happiness like  a
