MAKE AN IMPACT


PHYSICS STUDENT PEERS INTO PROTONS

Physics major Gabriel Grauvoge is taking his thirst for knowledge to the
subatomic level. With his Luther Rice Undergraduate Research Fellowship, he
joined a research effort looking inside the proton, the positively-charged
particles in an atom's nucleus that make up much of the visible matter in the
universe. As part of an international scientific effort, Grauvogel is
contributing to a historically cutting-edge research project. According to
Assistant Professor of Physics Axel Schmidt, his faculty mentor, Grauvogel's
work will help the physics world advance their understanding of “how protons,
neutrons and their constituent particles—the fundamental building blocks that
make up everything in our universe—are internally structured.”

BODY OF WORK: STUDENT ARTIST DECONSTRUCTS STEREOTYPES

After being partially paralyzed in an accident, Wes Holloway focused his work on
body images that challenge society’s expectations. Holloway, a graduate student
in the Social Practice Program, suffered a traumatic spinal cord injury that
left him paralyzed from the chest down. He committed to pursuing his dreams of
becoming a professional artist, while focusing his craft on deconstructing
stereotypes of masculinity, sexuality and body ideals.


GW EXPERTS OFFER ANALYSIS AND OBSERVATIONS ON RUSSIA/UKRAINE CRISIS

Elliott School of International Affairs Dean Alyssa Ayres moderated a discussion
with five GW faculty and alumni panelists that peeled off what is happening in
Eastern Europe layer by layer for a large virtual audience. “We've got a faculty
and alumni expertise able to cover every dimension of the crisis we are now
seeing in Ukraine,” Ayers said.
