In November 2020, the heads of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), the World Organization for Animal Health (OIE), and the World Health Organization (WHO) launched the One Health Global Leaders Group on Antimicrobial Resistance. National and international agencies are beginning to focus regional efforts aimed to reduce the emergence and spread of an ever-expanding list of AMR pathogens. Here are some examples: The European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) has two infographics on taking antibiotics responsibly and the growing resistance to last-line antibiotics. The United States (US) Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has published the Antibiotic Resistance Threats in the United States, 2019 which includes 18 antibiotic-resistant bacteria and fungi categorized based on their level of concern: urgent, serious, or concerning. In addition, CDC developed a Watch List that includes three antibiotic-resistant threats with the potential to spread or become a challenge in… * Fungi ToolboxEIDC Toolboxes AR/AMR | Influenza | Fungi | Parasites | Polio | Pox | SARS-CoV-2 | VHF | Waterborne Diseases | Zika Emerging Infectious Disease Toolboxes Flyer (PDF 3MB) Archived Resources New Resource 8/15/2023 Share/Suggest a ResourceQuestions, Comments, Suggestions? According to CDC, the United States has been polio-free since 1979, thanks to a successful vaccination program. The ABSA Emerging Infectious Diseases Committee has compiled the following resources for laboratory safety and occupational health. The U.S. National Authority for Containment of Poliovirus (NAC) at the CDC would like to share additional information regarding containment of poliovirus. Refer to the WHO guidance for working with potentially infectious materials (PIM) that may contain poliovirus when performing diagnostic work or testing wastewater samples. Note, the WHO PIM Guidance was provided in the resources provided by ABSA’s EIDC. It can also be assessed from the web: https://apps.who.int/iris/bitstream/handle/10665/341367/9789240021204-eng.pdf. If procedures call for the extraction of nucleic acids, see the reference below for information on inactivation methods effective for poliovirus. About the SARS Coronavirus -2 (SARS-CoV-2) The 2019 Novel Coronavirus (2019-nCoV) was an emerging respiratory virus first identified in Wuhan, Hubei Province, in China at the end of 2019. The World Health Organization (WHO) assigned the official name to the virus (Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus-2 – SARS-CoV-2) and the disease (COVID-19) in February of 2020. The origin and ancestral viruses have not been identified yet. Lau et al. suggested a possible origin in bats. SARS-CoV-2 sequences can be found in multiple repositories such as the NIH National Center for Bioinformatics (SRA runs and nucleotide sequences) and Nexstrain (clades, variants and global alignments). The CDC also maintains SPHERES, a domestic database to coordinate SARS-CoV-2 sequencing across the US. Furthermore, the SARS-CoV-2 strain isolated from the first documented case in the United States was published… * Viral Hemorrhagic Fevers ToolboxEIDC Toolboxes AR/AMR | Influenza | Fungi | Parasites | Polio | Pox | SARS-CoV-2 | VHF | Waterborne Diseases | Zika Emerging Infectious Disease Toolboxes Flyer (PDF 3MB) Archived Resources New Resource 8/15/2023 Share/Suggest a ResourceQuestions, Comments, Suggestions? With the increased drive for an effective treatment, Zika virus research will be increasing in many laboratories. The biosafety risk assessment will be important to guide safe work practices when tackling this new agent. Zika virus is listed in the BMBL as a risk group 2. Zika virus is transmitted by mosquitoes and usually causes a mild febrile illness. Unfortunately, Zika virus has also been shown to cause birth defects and prenatal deaths. The risk is not only to pregnant women, because Zika virus has been shown to be sexually transmissible from men to women. It is important that all information about risks is communicated to the workforce and biosafety committees so that informed choices are made. While scientists rush to help stop the spread of this virus and find new treatment strategies, safety remains an important consideration.
