THE DONLEN RISK CENTER: IMPROVING DRIVER SAFETY, PROACTIVELY

Driver carelessness can lead to obvious issues for your fleet: increased
spending, unexpected downtime, and, of course, the health of your drivers. If
you could prevent accidents before they even happen, wouldn’t you?
We’re proud to introduce a cutting-edge fleet management tool that can reduce
accident rates by up to 20 percent and save thousands of dollars by identifying
risky drivers in their commercial fleets.
COMPREHENSIVE FLEET SAFETY
Our technology, the Donlen Risk Center, received a 2021 BIG Innovation Award,
which recognizes the companies, people and products that bring new ideas to
life. The awards are presented annually by the Business Intelligence Group.
This fleet safety tool addresses one of a fleet professionals’ top priorities —
overall driver safety.
Using machine learning algorithms trained over a comprehensive set of fleet
data, the Donlen Risk Center provides predictive models for risky driver
behavior that allows fleet managers to take corrective action before accidents
occur, which typically starts with driver training.
“We are collecting large amounts data on accidents, driver behavior, and motor
vehicle records and coming up with likelihoods that these drivers would find
themselves in an accident,” said Keon Kim, manager of predictive analytics at
Donlen.
VISUALIZATION TO ALL FACETS OF YOUR FLEET
To access the system, fleet managers log onto FleetWeb, our comprehensive
cloud-based fleet management platform, and views the entire fleet’s risk profile
in an easy to view visualization that provides predictions, aggregated driver
data and allows the fleet manager to drill down to the specific driver detail
level. Among the data in the visualizations are: vehicle telematics infractions,
accident history, motor vehicle records, road violations, fuel activity, red
light and speed camera violations, maintenance risks, and safety training
history.
Each driver receives a score at one of four levels, based on predicted risk.
Fleet managers also get real-time alerts for risky driving behavior and use them
to take corrective action, including training programs.
Drivers also have an incentive to improve their performance by monitoring their
data through the DonlenDriver mobile app. For each trip drivers take, the
technology provides a score based on key criteria such as braking or
acceleration.
IMPRESS SENIOR LEADERSHIP WITH COST SAVINGS
The cost savings for companies using the Donlen Risk Center are substantial,
averaging reduced accident rates in commercial fleets by 15-20%. The average
cost of a fleet accident with no injuries is $16,500. That cost jumps to $75,000
for an accident with injuries and to $500,000 with a fatality.
“As expensive as paying for an actual accident is, if a driver gets hurt or
hurts somebody else, you can imagine the legal liabilities,” said Dennis
Straight, chief technology officer at Donlen. “There are a lot of costs far
beyond the accident and fixing the car itself.”
Fleet managers who have used the Donlen Risk Center have reported improved
safety of their drivers and reduced accident spend over the lifetime of their
vehicles, according to Elizabeth Rossiter, director of telematics safety and
accidents at Donlen. In addition, the company has continued to improve the
technology based on feedback from its customers and from its client advisory
board.
“We have an open loop to identify the pain points of our customers so we are
fully on the pulse of risk challenges,” Straight said. “The real-life feedback
from our customers is woven into the technology, and that’s one of the ways we
are delivering solutions for real risk issues.”
