this into a vertical mouse!

UPDATE August 7, 2020:I was surprised to see how many people tried my setup with
such success! (Full disclosure: I'm not the first one to convert this to a
vertical trackball, although others may not have used off-the-shelf products.)
The MOBI-GO! bean bag stand seems to be unavailable frequently, which is a shame
since it fits the Trackball so perfectly. I just bought this mouse for my son
and I'm trying a soft silicone smartphone stand as an alternative. I'll post my
results in a few days.This is my second M570. With my first, I encountered some
of the glitchy problems with the ball tracking noted in other reviews and I used
the solution of transferring the ball from my old wired version. But this most
recent trackball seems to have solved that problem. The ball scans and tracks
perfectly, even if I forget to clean the contacts and dirt builds up. The
convenience of the forward-back buttons is outstanding.I also stumbled onto a
solution to even further enhance its ergonomic features and minimize any
discomfort from long sessions at the computer. I used a MOBI-GO! Phablet & Phone
Prop/Stand to convert it into a vertical trackball! I've seen other home-built
conversions but this one is so simple, elegant, and effective that it can't be
beat. Combine it with a pad like the Kensington Duo Gel Mouse Pad with Wrist
Rest and you're in carpal tunnel-free heaven.I've included photos to show them
all together. Check out my review at the MOBI-GO! product page for more detail.I
miss my old classic Microsoft trackball but the combination of the M570 and
these enhancements allow me to spend many hours at work and play with zero
discomfort.

The Logitech M570 was the first mouse I purchased on my first attempt to make my
setup more ergonomic. I have since upgraded to the Logitech MX Ergo, but the
Logitech M570 is a valuable contender in your search for better ergonomics.
The Logitech M570 is a wireless rollerball mouse. This mouse is not rechargeable
and requires AAA batteries. A set of these is included in the box, and I got
about a year of continuous use before having to change them out. This mouse is
not Bluetooth compatible and requires an included dongle to connect to your
device.
Out of the box, the cursor speed is slow, but this can be easily adjusted in
your computer settings. A third-party application is not required to use this
mouse.
One thing to keep in mind with Roller balls is that they do get dirty over time.
To avoid a drop in sensitivity, clean regularly. Cleaning the Logitech M570 is
incredibly simple. To clean the mouse, simply remove the ball from the socket
and clean the inside of any debris.
This mouse is good for gaming. You don't get any extra keybinds, nor will be
ideal for high-end competitive play, but it will allow for a more comfortable
gaming session. I didn't notice any negative effects to my gameplay when I made
the switch.
I used this mouse for about a year before making the change. It took me a couple
of days to get used to the movement and find a sensitivity that met my needs. I
had been struggling with repetitive stress disorder in my hands and wrists up to
this point, and the pain made work difficult. Switching to this mouse helped
tremendously with this issue, and I keep this mouse at the office for work.
I love this mouse and recommend it if you are looking to upgrade your mouse. The
only reason I made the switch to the Logitech MX Ergo is because I spend too
much time in front of a computer. While the M570 did address a lot of the issues
I was having before, I found that the pain would return after a certain amount
of hours. This shouldn't be a problem for most people who use their computers a
healthy amount. The M570 will be a fantastic upgrade to your ergonomic setup.

This is a review of the Logitech M570 Wireless Trackball.
The 8,000+ people who gave this a positive review before me are right. If you’re
reading this, clicking the “Buy Now” button is not likely to be a decision
you’ll regret. I paid full price for this on Amazon about 9 months ago. There’s
many excellent videos and photos already; I couldn’t do any better.
♦BACKGROUND: Although I’m relatively young (early 30s), when it comes to using
computers, I try to maximize keyboard use and minimize mouse (or trackball) use.
From what I’ve observed, those who are most efficient in working with computers
are this way, and I try to emulate that. I LOVE keyboard shortcuts and regularly
challenge myself to adopt more (increased use of the Alt key is my current
focus).
♦WHY A TRACKBALL: I took a new position at the same company recently, which
involves using more web-based applications (boo). Unfortunately, most of these
are not keyboard-friendly, and I was using the mouse much more to the point of
experiencing hand and wrist discomfort regularly.
I remember my father having a trackball for ergonomic reasons when I was a
child. It was the kind with the huge ball in the middle. I disliked it intensely
then, but thought it was worth a try if it could help me avoid developing
serious or permanent problems with my hand and wrist.
♦WHY THIS TRACKBALL: When I searched Amazon for trackballs, I saw the
best-seller tag on this and decided to look further. I’ve had good experiences
with the other Logitech items I own. The design appealed to me: it is completely
different than the one from my childhood.
Prior to purchasing this, I deliberately avoided buying wireless mice or
keyboards that take replaceable batteries. It’s probably irrational, but I
thought I’d be having to change batteries frequently, which would be extra time,
money, and an inconvenience. If the wired version of this trackball wasn’t ten
times the cost of the wireless version, I definitely would have chosen the wired
one.
P.S. If you’re just beginning your search and you noticed and are curious about
the *slight* price difference, from what I’ve read, there was a copyright/patent
issue with the wired trackball and Logitech isn’t allowed to make it anymore.
The difference in speed between the wireless and wired versions is enough to be
noticeable to gamers; and the wired version is valued highly by the gamer
community.
♦LEARNING CURVE; ADJUSTMENT PERIOD?: This is silly, but I was somewhat worried
that I would hate the trackball and not want to use it. I wondered if using the
trackball would make me less efficient and if it would be hard to get in the
habit of using it. Since I use it on a desktop and there’s no shortage of USB
ports, I kept the mouse connected and plugged the Logitech Unifying receiver
into another one.
For a few days (not longer than a week), I used the trackball when I wasn’t in a
time crunch and switched to the mouse if I needed to speed up to get something
done. Although I still keep the mouse on my desk, I eventually got to a point
where I wasn’t using the it at all. If the trackball is slowing me down, I don’t
notice. Overall, switching to the trackball was far less traumatic than I
feared.
Side note: I’m left handed. I’ve always kept the mouse on the right side of the
keyboard and used it with my right hand. I would consider myself on the lower
end of the spatial-kinesthetic intelligence scale, but using the trackball with
my right hand and moving the arrow with my right thumb is a breeze.
♦WHAT I LIKE
•SPEED: As a non-gamer, I noticed no difference in speed from the wired mouse I
was using and the trackball.
•PLUG ‘N PLAY: There’s no software to install (for reference, I’m using this
with Windows 8). I could have gotten another ergonomic evaluation and had my
work order and pay for some kind of mouse-alternative, but I didn’t want the
hassle. Since I don’t have admin rights at work, I like that once the receiver
was plugged in, the trackball was recognized right away and ready to be used.
For convenience, the receiver can be stored in the battery compartment.
•BATTERY LIFE: Having used the trackball at work for 40+ hours a week for 9
months, the original battery is still going strong. Another worry of mine washed
away. If battery life was a concern, I could always use an Eneloop
(rechargeable) battery. Side note: this gave me confidence to purchase a
wireless Logitech mouse for home use. I don’t use the computer much at home, so
I wasn’t concerned about hand and wrist strain there.
•DURABILITY: Clumsy would not be an inaccurate word to describe me. I’ve knocked
the trackball off the keyboard tray where it sits *many* times already. Usually,
the ball comes out when it hits the ground. Despite this abuse, the trackball
doesn’t show any wear and tear, and the ball pops right back in. The compartment
where the ball sits picks up some dust and debris but it’s easy to clean out.
(Other reviews provide more detail on cleaning and maintenance).
•PAIN-FREE ME: The discomfort I was experiencing in my hand and wrist has
vanished. Shortly before deciding to order the trackball, I would see the carpal
tunnel center advertisements on television and wonder if that was my future.
That no longer concerns me.
♦CONS(IDERATIONS)
My hands are on the small side. For a reference, with my hand outstretched, I
measured the distance from the tip of the middle finger to the bottom of the
palm (by the creases where the wrist starts) as 6.75”. I spread my thumb and
pinky fingers out as wide as I could and the distance was 8.25”.
Until recently, the fleshy part of my palm (the bottom part, under the pinky
finger towards where my hand met my wrist) would get red by the end of the day
on most days. At first, I was thinking that I’d prefer the body of the trackball
to be made of something more comfortable. After more thought, I came to the
conclusion that the redness was a result of my palm resting on the body, causing
the pressure and redness. If my hand was larger or the body smaller, the weight
of my hand wouldn’t be on the body.
I have a spare mousepad with a gel wrist rest and decided to start using it with
the trackball. Now that the gel piece supports my wrist, the weight of my hand
isn’t on the body of the trackball. After a couple of weeks, the issue has
largely been resolved. After re-reading some reviews today, I’m thinking about
making a foam wedge as described in another review.
There’s only one other annoyance for me. I assume that the index finger and
middle finger are supposed to rest on the buttons surrounding the scroll wheel.
Although I don’t use the back/forward navigation buttons, my index finger has a
habit of resting on them, and I’ve been “left-clicking” with my middle finger.
It works, I suppose, but I’d be happier if those buttons weren’t there.
Recently, I’ve been using the trackball rotated about 45-90 degrees
counter-clockwise. In this position, my palm doesn’t rest on it and I naturally
use my index finger for the left-click button and my middle finger for the
right-click button. Manipulating the trackball with my thumb is still
comfortable.

I started using the "Logitech (wired) Trackball OR "logitech trackman marble
mouse" (still have an old one) device over 10 years ago.
As I said in headline I have bought this again and again.
I was not upgrading as such... The older the Trackball (i.e. my 10+ years old
trackball (wired) still works, even the buttons.
Logitech realised they had built "too well" and the M570 is a lower "standards"
version of the original trackball.
This is my 2nd M570 and this was purchased ONLY becuase the [left & right-click]
& started "acting up" (they would register a "double-tap" or not see/act after a
"click".
I give it 5 stars because I love the trackball (I actually use the ball form my
wired as that too is now a "cheaper version") and the my wrist, which is the
point, is not in pain.
Bottom-line... Logitech have decided that lower build quality makes a "good
business model" so expect to replace ANY device from them in approx. 2-3 years
(after warrranty for sure).
No way would I buy the NEW trackball.. i.e. the Logitech MX Ergo at the price it
is listed for.
I CANNOT depend on build qaulity... I will buy MX Ergo when the M570 is no
longer available anywhere!

I swap the "ball" with my (10+ year old) "red w/black dots marble" ball. The
difference in "feel" is a big.

In my job I code, post , do web designs, maintain servers, manipulate images,
create catalogs, and create data tables for online shopping ...I'm working on my
computers far more than your average user ever would.
A number of years ago I was doing a large job during which my wrist became very
sore. I believe it 's called carpel tunnel. I learned that if I kept doing what
I'm doing I could get extreme pain and may need an operation. I went searching
for an alternative pointing device and found the Logitech trackball M570.
It's been over 15 years since switching and my pain is completely gone. Now my
wife, colleague and others, I know have switched to this trackball. Yes it takes
a little getting used to, but once you do, you'll never use a mouse again if
given the choice. It's vastly superior to to a regular mouse.
What you need to know ...
-It's wireless and uses what Logitech calls a unifying receiver (plugs into USB
port)
-You can use more than one trackball at a time on different computers on the
same desk, they don't interfere with other trackballs. The receiver and
trackball are a matched pair.
-It uses a 1 AA battery and it lasts about a year, I've never really kept track.
I do turn it off when I'm not using it.
-Unlike a mouse, you do not need a flat surface, or for that matter any surface
to use the trackball. I sometimes use it on my lap or for my smart TV on the
couch.
Tips:
If you buy one, adjust the ballistics (cursor speed and distance ) to your
liking. I found it too slow.
If you get more than one trackball, color code or mark the the corresponding
receiver so you don't get them mixed up with the others.
The only thing negative I can think of ...Logitech only makes a right handed
unit. I'd really like a left handed unit as well!

These tend to last about a year and a half. The switch under the “forward”
button (which I usually assign to Page Up) dies first. The left button starts to
register double clicks which can cause catastrophic issues depending on what
software you’re using. I discovered that an air duster blasted at the gap
beneath the button can temporarily alleviate this problem, leading me to believe
it’s caused by dust rather than the spring beneath the button losing tension.
The ball isn’t as slick, the new ball simply isn’t as smooth moving the cursor –
so I replaced it with the ball from the dead mouse and now it’s great. Maybe
there’s more skin oil on the old one. I have many mice but I use this the most,
the design is so good Amazon have released their own version which I might try
in the hope that their version has better switches and springs. The software is
great, battery life is stellar. Overall, the Logitech M570 is a great mouse with
short lived switches and springs. This is my third M570. I'll get another M570
once this dies in about 18 months. I’m hoping to eventually have enough spare
parts to make a glitchy new one. Was the decision to use such awful switches an
example of planned obsolescence by Logitech? It's likely, and an evil strategy
which adds unnecessarily to the massive mountains of technological waste that
you pesky humans bury in land and sea. I'd stop buying these if they weren't so
damn good.

This is my third one of these. They work well and save my wrist from
destruction. However, the switch in the left mouse button WILL fail eventually,
probably before you expect. I keep buying the things for two reasons: I need a
trackball and the Logitech is the best of a basically crappy lot of the
available devices. I just have resigned myself to buying a new one every 12 to
18 months, which is probably part of the Logitech marketing strategy, since they
could have resolved the issue a long time ago, and haven't.
Update November 2018: Now I am on my fourth M570 trackball. The third one failed
in the same way as the first two (left button), but surprisingly it lasted a
little over two years, which is an improvement. Maybe Logitech is using better
button microswitches... time will tell how long number four will last. This is
still, in my opinion, the only trackball worth using, despite its flaws.

I have been using this design of mouse since it first came out. I seriously have
no idea why anyone would use anything else. I bought one for my office pc too,
as we are only supplied with a standard corded mouse, and they are useless and
uncomfortable. Honestly, just try it, persevere for a couple of weeks and you
will never want to use a standard mouse again.
The only poor design element is that if you drop it, the ball will drop out and
you can guarantee it will roll under the filing cabinet! Something to lock it in
would be good.
