A drive around Australia takes a long, long time and it’s little wonder that many Aussies spend a year or more on the road exploring, living in tents, caravans or motorhomes. The drive around Australia covers 14, 935 km / 9,280 miles via National Highway 1. Even the little island state of Tasmania can easily take a few months to fully explore and the famous East Coast Road Trip from Sydney up to Cairns in Far North Queensland needs about 6 weeks to experience. For many visitors to the country, a self-drive road trip through the outback regions of Australia, such as Melbourne to Uluru (Ayers Rock) will be a once in a lifetime experience. We still have many miles of unsealed red-dirt roads where it is possible to be well off the main routes and get to know remote regions of the country. It is also possible to drive the whole way around Australia and keep to sealed roads whilst still seeing the outback as well as the coastal regions, mountains, and cities the country is famous for. We love road trips and have a number of itineraries that may help others with planning, most of our drives start in Melbourne and have included two weeks to see Uluru, touring The Flinders Ranges, camping, and exploring New South Wales and within Victoria.
