EQUINE TERMINOLOGY

Note: We use the throughbred age definitions.

COLT

Male horse under 4 years of age.

YEARLING

Young horse between 1 & 2 years of age, either sex.

FILLY

Female horse under 4 years of age.

STALLION

Intact adult male horse, used for breeding.

GELDING

Castrated adult male horse.

FOAL

Young horse up to 1 years of age, either sex.

WEANLING

Young horse up to 1 years of age, either sex, that has just been weaned.

MARE

Female horse over 4 years of age.
