MATAROA. THE JOURNEY GOES ON…
IN DECEMBER 1945, 150 YOUNG MEN AND WOMEN EMBARKED UPON THE SHIP CALLED
“MATAROA”, WITH PARIS AS THEIR FINAL DESTINATION. THEIR DRAMATIC ESCAPE FROM
WAR-STRICKEN GREECE WAS A TRAUMATIC EXPERIENCE THAT TURNED INTO CREATIVITY,
MARKING THE INTELLECTUAL AND ARTISTIC DEVELOPMENTS OF POSTWAR EUROPE. A PASSAGE
FROM OBLIVION TO MEMORY OF A GENERATION AND A JOURNEY THAT CONTINUES TO INSPIRE

SYNOPSIS
In December 1945 and while the country was devastated by civil war, the French
Institute of Athens manages, after many attempts, to charter a military ship,
“Mataroa”, offering at about 150 young Greek scientists and artists the
possibility of escaping/fleeing to France. Amongst those who boarded this ship
were representatives of a blooming generation, whose work marked the
intellectual and artistic landscape of postwar Europe: Kostas Axelos, Cornelius
Castoriadis, Giorgos Kandylis, Kostas Koulentianos, Mimika Kranaki, Kostas
Papaioannou, Memos Makris, Nikos Svoronos, and Matsi Hatzilazarou. Later on,
Iannis Xenakis would be added to the group.
The film narrates the context and conditions of a journey that is inextricably
linked to the most traumatic aspects of recent Greek history. These aspects
remain largely unknown to the wider public as a result of the silence, thus far,
of the very passengers of the boat, whose generation was deeply influenced by
this untold experience of the postwar period. The documentary tells the story of
how this unexpected departure from Athens turned out to be vital to the survival
of this generation of young scientists, intellectuals and artists, offering them
the opportunity to turn their stay in a foreign land into a source of freedom,
inspiration and creativity. As such, the documentary brings out the elements
that are central for the understanding of these individuals’ intellectual and
artistic inspiration and their personal itineraries.
The documentary depicts the process of a journey that emerges out of oblivion
and settles into memory, aiming to offer a living testimony of this epic passage
between three different generations. It is based on the oral testimonies of the
living passengers of “Mataroa” and on rare archival footage that places the
course of events within a historical context. The film approaches the children
of these passengers – the so-called second generation – who now discover the
journey that has been kept silent by their parents. The revelation of this
journey and of the repressed memory marks the tracing of unknown aspects not
only of their family history, but also of the history of a country from which
these children of the second generation were intentionally severed. The
narration is enriched through the expressive means of multi-vocal re-discoveries
and re-uses of the journey by today’s philosophers, actors, graphic novelists,
musicians, painters and photographers who tend to idealize the “Mataroa
generation”, claiming that this unique event continues, seventy years later, to
fascinate and inspire.
These different artistic fields, with particular focus on the theatrical and
graphic novel representations of the journey of “Mataroa, are treated as
elements that promote dramatization, enriching the archival footage and the
talking heads interviews of the over-aged passengers. The documentary leads to a
reconfiguration of history through the fading out of memories due to the passage
of time, the incomplete narration of personal experiences and the selective use
of events by different artistic fields. The historical event of this journey
thus becomes topical, acquiring a personal touch through each narration and
through the distinct artistic expressions.
