KIRSTY'S PETS Casper the Rabbit, Thunder & Lightning the dwarf hamsters * About * New Cage Set-up HAMTARO’S HOME I recently upgraded Hamtaro’s cage set up to one large cage. The cage you see here is the new 100cm Barney Cage. The RSPCA minimum cage size for a Syrian hamster is 80x40x40cm. I do not recommend using multiple cages or levels to meet these requirements. Hamtaro has been much happier since I have upgraded his cage to one large floor space. This cage is very well suited to a Syrian hamster For the substrate I have used a base layer of pet-safe wood shavings. Under the platform and in the wooden house there is also a thick layer of Care Fresh and then a pile of paper bedding which Hamtaro uses to build his nests. Hamtaro has a large wooden 12inch wheel to prevent him from arching his back when he runs. He also has lots of wooden bridges and tunnels which he enjoys running through and hiding under. I am also looking into getting more hanging toys for Hamtaro’s cage to prevent falls, however this hamster is not very good at climbing so it is less of a concern. Hamtaro enjoys digging in dust free chinchilla sand. Hamtaro’s sand bath is probably one of his favourite toys. He loves to dig and roll in the sand. He does sometimes also use this as a toilet, which is fine, just means I need to clean it more often. I use dust free chinchilla sand (not dust! (Dust is too fine for hammies!) Bathing in sand also helps Hamtaro keep his coat nice and shiny. You must never put your hamster in a bath with water! It is very dangerous for hamsters to be wet as this can cause their body temperature to drop. A hamster that becomes too cold can go into a state called Torpor which is an unplanned form of hibernation. Hamtaro also has his wooden house to hide in. It is essential that hamsters have places to hide when they feel threatened. Advertisement I first purchased Hamtaro from Pets at Home, who told me that the pink ferplast Laura cage was big enough for a Syrian hamster. Hamtaro is my first hamster and he was an impulse buy. I advise people to do as much research as possible before getting a hamster as I wasted a tonne of money on the wrong things in the beginning. When I found out Hamtaro’s cage was too small I added more and more cages. The biggest cage in this set up was only 50cm long which makes it too small for a Syrian Hamtaro’s old cage set up was not ideal for several reasons. While Hamtaro was in this cage set up he rarely played with his toys and was spending more time sleeping and less time running on his wheel. The tubes were becoming a concern because hamsters age so quickly Hamtaro may not have been able to climb them in several months time, he also struggled to fit when his check pouches were stuffed with food. This cage set up also took over an hour to clean out due to having to remove all of the tubes. I find it easier to interact with Hamtaro in his new cage because I can easily open the top door and offer food on my hand and carefully pet him. Overall I am so pleased I replaced the old set up with one large cage, Hamtaro seems much happier. SHARE THIS: * Twitter * Facebook * LIKE THIS: Like Loading...
