For research questions about the Index, please contact research@bcnpha.ca. Close WHY THE "INDEX"? × The Canadian Rental Housing Index uses supply and affordability data from the 2021 census to measure the health of rental housing across Canada. In previous iterations of the site, each community was given two overall scores – one that illustrated how it compared to other communities in the same province, and another that illustrated how it compared to all communities in Canada. Each community was scored out of 50, based on summing five indicators out of 10 points each. For each indicator, zero represented optimal health of the rental market and ten was assigned to the worst ranking community for that indicator. All other communities fell somewhere in between these two points. While we no longer use this method for comparing communities, the “Index” is still represented in the name of the site. Close DATA × The Canadian Rental Housing Index was compiled using data from the 2016 long-form census, obtained through a Statistics Canada custom data request. The long-form census is the most comprehensive and up-to-date data on rents and incomes for communities throughout the country. All of the data in the Rental Housing Index is for renter households, which are sorted into income quarters with a roughly equal number of renter households in each quarter. Income quarters are specific to renter households for each community. All income and rent data are displayed by income quarter and unit size. Overcrowding data are displayed for the whole community by income quarter, but not by unit size. If you have further questions about the data, please visit Data FAQ for additional information. Close 2011 RHI DATA × In 2015, BCNPHA partnered with Vancity credit union, non-profit and private rental housing associations, and other social-purpose organizations to create the Canadian Rental Housing Index. The original Index was based on data from the 2011 National Household Survey (2011 census) and provides an overview of the rental housing market in jurisdictions across Canada. Due to differing methodologies between the 2011 National Household Survey and the 2016 long-form census, Statistics Canada advises against direct comparisons between the 2011 and 2016 data, as such, the 2011 data was not included in this update to the Index. The long-form census contains the most comprehensive and up-to-date data on rents, incomes, and overcrowding for large and small communities throughout the country. In 2014, BCNPHA and Vancity Credit Union joined forces to develop the Rental Housing Index for British Columbia, and the following year partnered with organizations across Canada to develop a national version of the CRHI. The CRHI provides a solid, data-driven foundation for policy-making decisions at all levels of government. It will be updated continually as new data becomes available.
