Regular GPS

Autonomous vehicles - whether on the ground or in the air - require centimeter
to decimeter accurate positioning during operation. Conventional solutions based
on GNSS (e.g., GPS) or GNSS/INS fusion alone cannot achieve centimeter accuracy,
nor are they reliable or accurate enough to operate in all environments.

Autonomous with lower cost

Robot lawn mowers reduce costs while saving time and energy, contributing to
their popularity for residential gardens as well as professional landscapes
around building, parks, and golf courses. The current technology, often
employing random- or grid-pattern navigation, has several disadvantages
especially when dealing with complex lawn boundaries, islands, and large areas.

Areas are often mowed twice or missed altogether. Perimeter wires usually need
to be pre-installed and maintained. Burying, and then finding and repairing a
broken perimeter wire is an arduous manual process.

Utility robots often encounter areas where GNSS (e.g. GPS) satellite signals are
degraded or blocked, especially in cities. Urban terrain is also complex, and
traditional map-matching used by automotive navigation systems to enhance
satellite information is not available to smaller urban robots travelling
off-road along sidewalks or through campuses, parks and office complexes.

Without sufficient positional information, robots can become stuck or lost,
unable to complete their task and require expensive human intervention.
