The best way to do this is to embrace a minimalist lifestyle. Having a minimalist home and incorporating minimalist home decor are great ways to take an otherwise hectic life and replace it with easy-to-organize, simple changes. Let me walk you through the best ways to achieve this goal with twenty-five tips for creating a minimalist home. What Does A Minimalist Home Look Like? A minimalist home is simple, showcases the essentials, and boasts a clean and organized atmosphere. They also take away unnecessary distractions and help you focus on yourself and your personal goals. Minimalist homes are clean, sleek, and modern. With less clutter in the home, you will gain more head-space and lead a much less stressful existence. 25 TIPS FOR CREATING A MINIMALIST HOME 1. Take it one step at a time The point of a minimalist home is to destress. If you tackle it all in one day, what is supposed to calm you may overwhelm you. Take these tips and act on them one at a time so that you can slowly incorporate a minimalist lifestyle into your home. Rome wasn’t built in a day, and neither should your home be. 2. Clean as you go The best way to maintain a minimalist home is to keep it tidy. Wash the dishes right after you use them, immediately put up clean laundry, and shelve books once you are done reading them. Family Cleaning Bundle 3. Let yourself be free The best part about creating a minimalist home is that you can free yourself from the burden of having too much stuff. Get rid of anything you haven’t used in the past year. Donate it, sell it, or trash it. If it doesn’t bring you any happiness or essential use, get rid of it and be free! 4. Get rid of the extras If you have more than one of the same thing, get rid of it. In reality, you don’t need four sets of the same pots and pans. You don’t need twelve different pairs of shoes that serve the same purpose. Pick your favorites and lose the extras. 5. Get creative with the space you have Everything in your minimalist home should serve a purpose. Utilize shelving, incorporate the essentials in the space you are given, and take out anything that is unnecessary and takes up a large amount of space. We love Fell Andes for adding simple accessories and simplistic decor pieces. 6. Utilize storage Everything has the ability to act as storage, you just have to get creative. Organize the space under your bed with rolling storage bins, use bare wall space to add a tasteful shelf or two, and invest in an ottoman that can be used to put things out of sight and out of mind. 7. Try not to buy in bulk This one may be tougher to grasp, but it will save your home from clutter. Try to buy only what you need. If you must buy something in bulk, such as toilet paper, try to find a way to store it creatively so it won’t take up too much of your space. 8. Remodel If you have the funds to do so, remodeling awkwardly placed or large appliances and countertops can bring you to the point you need to be at for a minimalist home. Start with your kitchen or bathroom and replace shelving, counters, and appliances to fit your minimalist needs. If you want to add some essentials, we recommend Rise & Fall. 9. Replace bulky furniture Going along with my previous point, get rid of clunky furniture. Replace big beds and couches with smaller ones that, while still comfortable, fit your needs. 10. Knockdown some walls Creating space is a key component of creating a minimalist home. If you turn rooms into open-concept areas by removing some unneeded walls, it can really bolster your living space. 11. When you buy something new, get rid of something old For everything you buy, take a look at what you already have. Try to find one nonessential thing in your home to get rid of every time you introduce new items into your home. This can be a refreshing way to change the scenery in your home and reduce clutter. 12. Clear your walls When you display too much on your walls, it can become a distraction. Try to narrow your wall decor to a select few pieces, and rid yourself of anything extra. 13. Constantly edit your home What I mean by this is keep a constant flow of change in your home. Don’t let anything sit and collect dust for too long, or it could become nonessential. Switch out the layout of your furniture, replace old pictures and rugs, and constantly try to find ways to better yourself and your minimalist home. 14. Make sure everything has a specific place Everything you own should have a designated place in your home. That way, once you use something, you always know where it is supposed to go so it doesn’t sit out and become clutter. The broom should always have a place to hang on the back of the door or in a closet. The pots and pans should have a specific place they need to be put up. You get the idea. 15. Exercise restraint I know it can be hard at first, but stay strong! Holding on to a shirt you’ve had since high school can be very sentimental, but I promise you do not need it. Just imagine how much freer you’ll feel once you get rid of all the clutter. MINIMALIST HOME DECOR TIPS We can’t talk about creating a minimalist home without touching a bit on decor and minimalist aesthetic. Let’s continue and dive right into these essential decor tips: 1. Pick brighter colors The key to minimalist living is utilizing space. A good way to trick the eyes into thinking that a room has more space is by painting the walls with brighter colors. Dark colors can seem claustrophobic at times, so adding a new, light coat of paint can really make a room feel spacious. 2. Pick solid colors Prints that are too busy or distracting to the eye can detract from your minimalist decor. Play it simple and choose solid colors that complement the entire room. 3. Pick out wall decorations that really pop Because you are trying to reduce the number of items you hang on your walls, try to pick the decor that really speaks to you. Find pieces that showcase the best parts of your home and get rid of the things that don’t. 4. Choose smaller, nicer pieces of furniture I touched on this a bit in my previous list, but finding the best pieces of furniture that really give your room some flair is a good starting point for minimalist home decor. Try to focus on sleek but comfortable furniture that gives you what you need but leaves you with more room to breathe. 5. Change up texture Even though minimalist homes can be beautiful, they can get boring if you’re not careful. While keeping similar color patterns, try to mix up the textures of the furniture and decorations in the home to give the eye some pleasing contrasts. 6. Pick a good base color and build on it The best way to make the colors in your room to flow nicely is to pick a nice base color to build off of. All of the colors in the room should complement this color. 7. Plan ahead Study each area of your home and try to imagine what will look good and what won’t. Planning your decor ahead of time can save you a lot of hassle, and it will also keep you from impulse-buying. 8. Stagger A good way to keep minimalist home decor pleasing is to break up areas of blank space with focal points of decor. 9. Clean, even lines Try to keep everything even and clear of clutter, and focus on linear designs. This sharper design tactic draws in the eye while not taking up too much space. 10. Let there be light! Always allow ample light to filter into the rooms of your home. It gives off a cleaner feel to your home and gives it a bright, positive atmosphere. We recommend GANT LIGHTS for simple lighting fixtures. MINIMALIST HOME ESSENTIALS Every minimalist home should be a focal point of the essentials in life.
