Is it full of handcarts and stacks of products—books in one corner, clothing in another? Or is it a huge, bright building with orange robots transporting towers of goods, miles of conveyor belts carrying inventory in every direction, and shipping labels practically flying onto boxes, blown by puffs of air? Amazon fulfillment centers are not traditional warehouses. Some of our buildings span the equivalent of 28 football fields and can hold millions of products at a given time. On a tour, you will see how products in your online shopping cart get from Amazon to you. It's a symphony of people and technology that allows us to deliver orders quickly and efficiently to customers around the world. Cutting-edge technology Since 2012, Amazon has used robots to move inventory around our fulfillment centers. Tours allow you to see different types of robots in action and explain how they make the fulfillment process more efficient. Robots not only benefit the people who work alongside them, by reducing the distance we walk. They also improve the shopping experience for our customers by allowing us to hold more inventory and process orders more quickly. The robots are incredibly smart, but they aren't competing for jobs—they're creating them. Robots enable more inventory to pass through our fulfillment centers, which means more employees are needed for handling that inventory. Since 2012, we have added tens of thousands of robots to our fulfillment centers, while also adding hundreds of thousands of full-time jobs globally. Who we are On the tour, you will meet people working to fulfill customer orders and learn about the benefits and professional development opportunities available for our employees. One highlight is Career Choice, a program that covers 100% of tuition and fees for coursework in high-demand career areas. You will also meet some of our world-class tour leaders, who run tours in more than 45 locations across eight countries. Many of our tour leaders previously held other jobs within our fulfillment centers, and can speak to what it's like to work at Amazon based on their firsthand experience in different roles.
