WCGALP GUIDELINES FOR PITCHES

Guidelines for presenters and chairs: WCGALP pitches

The idea behind pitching is that the door of the elevator opens, and you enter.
There is this wonderful crowd of geneticist interested in livestock already. You
have 1.5 minutes to spark interest in your research. Why should they remember
and contact you or read details in the paper? After 1.5 minutes the elevators
doors open again, and you have to get out.

Preparation of pitches

 * Presenters should prepare a pitch of no longer than 1.5 minute.
 * For presenters attending live, this will be a live pitch. For presenters
joining online, this will be a pre-recorded video pitch.
 * Presenters are asked to prepare one PowerPoint slide for their pitch, without
animations, that will be shown during their pitch.
 * Please include your contact information on your slide so people can contact
   you for more information afterwards.
 * More information on how to record a pitch in PowerPoint can be found here:
Record a slide show with narration and slide timings (microsoft.com)
 * Some additional tips:
   * Use a clear slide with either a catchy figure of your subject or a clear
simple graph that shows the main message of your pitch.
   * The goal of this pitch is to spark interest in the audience, so it is
important to share your main message without too many details.
   * Have a look at our example pitch here: LINK

Pitching process at WCGALP

 * In each session, first all live pitches will be presented, followed by the
   video pitches.
 * A lectern is available in each room, where the presenters can pitch their
   work.
 * Presenters will be asked to make sure they are ready to enter the stage as
soon as the preceding pitch starts. They can wait at the side of the stage.
 * Once the previous presenter finishes the pitch, the screen will show the
slide of the next presenter and the next presenter will move to the lectern.
 * Please announce the presenters by introducing their name and the topic of the
pitch, after which the presenters can start their pitch.
 * After the pitch, the presenter will be asked to leave the stage on the
opposite side of where they entered the stage (hereby keeping 1.5 m distance
   between presenters at all times).
 * Even though we ask chairs to be strict in time keeping, we also encourage
chairs to make the process feel organic: in the schedule, 2 minutes per
presenter are scheduled, to allow for switching between presenters and to
perhaps pose a question to a presenter every once in a while. Be relaxed and
   it should be fun!
