What is TFDb? NEWS & UPDATES: * Photos post 2024-02-02 11:37 am by Unicron.com Today we'll look at something pretty different. A while back I had mentioned I have been in the process of buying several off the wall items from Brazil. I received some more stuff and these were the highlight, large store displays from 1993. These displays are over 2 feet in size and made from a flexible and durable pvc plastic. The backs are white and unmarked, while the fronts are very colorful. They have holes at the top to hang them (one includes a set of plastic pegs), and on the bottom are thin slits that can hold plastic runners or metal pegs. The runners that came with these are very fragile from sun exposure (one runner didn't survive the trip). They feature artwork from the toyline and include the popular white Carrera from the Argentinian Antex line. There's a lot of gray tape when it comes to Estrela and Antex that we wont cover here. Both displays feature the logo for "Magazine Mesbla", this same logo was seen on the small display from my earlier post. One display has the tag line "They arrived! The most notable group of superheroes invades Earth!"; while the other display says "Mesbla takes you to the future." What is Mesbla? It was a series of department stores that was a major player in the Brazilian market in the 1980s through 1990s. Why do the displays all say Magazine Mesbla? I'm not sure. There is a real possibility that these are counterfeit items, made in recent times using scans from several sources, but they could also be legitimate items from the Estrela era of toys. In the foreign markets it wouldn't be unheard of for stores to do whatever they wanted to promote a toyline. I'm inclined to believe these are not modern fakes, but instead were generic displays to promote the G1 toys (again, these are dated 1993, indicating a late release by G1 standards and tying into the tail end of the European releases). The cost for someone to reproduce something like this in Brazil would require some pretty specific machinery as well as time and cost. The age on the signs, especially the plastic runners, also indicates something from the 1990s. At the end of the day, I'm not sure what we have here. I personally hope it's a bit of lost history for Transformers. Maybe I threw money into the wind, in which case I have some really cool displays. What do you all think? Were any of you living in Brazil during this time? This era of Transformers is heavily under-documented beyond which toys were made and a few catalog scans. Either way, real or fake, I hope you can enjoy these beautiful pieces! ---Erik TRM * Photos post 2024-01-31 10:28 pm by Unicron.com Battle of the Rock Lords! Via Sonic Bomber-Core on FB. “Legacy Deluxe Shard. The next Infernac universe Rocklord character. This one is my favorite so far, the commercial-style helicopter is an alt-mode we don’t get often enough, and we finally get to see these Rocklords shine with some real color. It helps that green is my favorite color too 😉 I’m not sure what sort of weapon I’m meant to build from Shard, they have a lot of nice modular pieces, but I figure I’ll wait to let people show off what they come up with once more folks have this figure.” * Photos post 2024-01-31 9:43 am by Unicron.com It was 2001 and Beast Machines was falling hard in both viewership and toy sales. It was time to wrap up the story that had breathed life back into the Transformers Franchise and this meant calling it quits with any toys that were currently in production or in development. Before everything switched gears into the Robots in Disguise era, the last few bots for Beast Machines hit the shelves, this includes what might be one of the more unique figures made, Battle Unicorn. It is not known how many of these were sold in stores, but it was an incredibly low amount, leading this figure to sell for close to $100 within days! I, was beyond lucky to find my original Battle Unicorn one night in a local Walmart. After this, BigBadToyStore carried the figure online after getting a decent stock directly from Hasbro. This figure was a Basic Class figure and transforms from a Unicorn into a robot that looks strikingly similar to a Samurai of feudal Japan. He is made from black and translucent blue plastic with highlights of chrome red and gold. A small mechanism on the left shoulder allows the head to bob up and down and strike with its horn. The transformation is pretty basic. The figure splits down the body rotating everything upright and repositioning a few bits. It is simple in design, but due to some small issues with the toy, you'll need to position everything EXACTLY in the right spot to get the body to stay together. Another notorious issue is with the left shoulder armor. It is on two small pegs that rarely hold the armor and place and can be a pain in the butt to get back on. While doing this photo set, it took me over a half hour to finally get the shoulder on and have the Unicorn stand flat on the ground. All of this aside, for me, this is one of the top ten figures made in the Transformers Franchise. There's just something fun about having a mean-looking Unicorn on your shelf, and in robot mode, with his giant axe, he looks intimidating compared to other bots. A few years later in 2003, during the Universe toyline, Battle Unicorn was repainted as Magna Stampede. This version of the figure was now designed as a Zebra Unicorn. The Zerba Unicorn has been seen several times in media with notable instances being the MTG card "Zebra Unicorn" and WoW's Swift Zhevra mount. This figure has a pearlescent white that is offset with black highlights with blue and dark brown chrome bits. Under the right lighting conditions it nearly looks magical and again, like Battle Unicorn, is an impressive figure on any shelf. Both of these figures are very rare, with Battle Unicorn having a short production run and Magna Stampede sold with a hard-to-find gift set. Expect to pay around 75-$100 for loose examples. Battle Unicorn on card can range all over the place but averages in the $100-$150 range. Magna Stampede was sold with another basic class figure and two Min-Cons (though neither figure had a Mini-Con port). This set sells from $100-$200. This pricing shows one of the few times that loose figures are fetching the same prices as their boxed versions; a testament to just how popular they are. I Honestly feel every Transformer collection should have these two figures as they are from a rather forgettable section of Transformers history. Even with their flaws, I'd give these a 10 out of 10, but I'm biased as I've thought Unicorns were kind of cool. ---Erik TRM * Photos post 2024-01-30 10:16 am by Unicron.com Behold God Fire Convoy aka Omega Prime! Do you like it or were you hoping for something else ? #TransformersRobotsinDisguise * Photos post 2024-01-29 8:23 pm by Unicron.com Let's do something a bit different today and take a quick peek into the world of KO robots. If you'd like to see more stuff like this, let us know down below; with over 5,000 robots sitting in "the Vault" I have tons of material to write about! A strange little figure from the 1980s/90s is Mosquite from the Insecto-Bots toyline. This figure was released under several lines throughout the years and is based on the Transformable Robot V World: Fighting Insects figure, Mosquito. Look, sometimes knockoff bots were pretty lazy, and when they were knocking off a knockoff, you get a figure like this fella. Filled to the brim with gold plastic, the trouble spots are the leg swivels at the waist, where the plastic is incredibly thin and fragile. This guy is beyond common in junk lots and with effort, you should be able to find it for $5 or less. Carded examples cost $20+, with some sellers asking over $100. ---Erik TRM * Photos post 2024-01-27 5:39 pm by Unicron.com Studio Series Bumblebee Movie Concept Art Decepticon Rumble I am really happy that Hasbro Takara Tomy decided to bring the concept art designs into the Studio Series because some of those unused movie designs are really great and this Rumble is definitely one of them. G1 original molds, cartoon decos! Whatdya think?! Via https://x.com/alfes2010?s=21 * Photos post 2024-01-21 6:05 pm by Unicron.com This is not an endorsement, nobody has been paid, this is just a review I've been wanting to do for a while now. I've put this off since ToyRobot Magazine started up around 3 years ago, but it's time to take Fans Project Saurus Ryu-Oh off the shelf and do a mini-review of this monster. Put out in 2015/2016, this figure is an homage to the G1 Dinokijng Micromaster/Pretender combiner. He is made from six bots: Dino Ichi (a burly monster that forms the chest), Dinoni (a bird-like monster that becomes an arm), Dinosan (a four-legged beast that becomes the lower torso), Dinoshi (a strange winged four-legged beast that becomes an arm), Dinogo (a werebeast of some sort that becomes a leg), and Dinoroku (an upright gator type monster that becomes a leg). Each figure is colored to look like the original G1 toys and their names mean Terrible One-Six. Pretty basic, but it works. For a third-party toy, expect some tight joints, some loose joints, and maybe a bit of foul language as you try to get everything to cooperate. Overall, this toy has held up well over the years. The one pictured is several years old and has not worn down over time, which can be surprising for the weight of the toy bearing down on a few joints. Each figure has a decent transformation, with my personal favorite being Dinosan. I'm not sure what this little monster is, but it's overly cute in my eye and I'd almost consider being a second one to display in beast mode. All the figures come with weapons, though a few were nearly impossible to fit into the robot's hands. You can also attach the Saurus Ryu-Oh feet to Dinosan, but I didn't want to mess with it during the photo shoot. To take the giant robot apart, transform each figure, and put him back into combined mode took me around 2 hours, but I was using pictures as my guide due to the instructions being in storage. Though a few parts felt very iffy, there wasn't a major risk of anything breaking during Transformation. I would advise extreme caution with Dinoni's wings, they felt much more fragile than anything else on these bots. The weapons of each figure can combine, but putting it together and taking it apart can lead to some stress in the plastic, while other parts barely hold together. A great concept, but I feel it is poorly executed. His battle axe is absurdly large and looks cool. There are add-ons you can buy for this guy, including extra weapons, and yes, they made pretender shells for these figures, just like the G1 toys! These add-ons are around $10 retail for the weapon packs and $70 retail for the shells. However, based on each retailer, items may vary in price or if they even have them in stock. Try to avoid the second market on the shells. The Saurus Ryo-Oh figures are around $70 each or $400 ish for the combiner. Again, different sites may have these on sale or may be out of stock, so I'd advise looking around for a good deal. Overall, I'm not a huge fan of third-party figures, but this is a solid toy and achieves its goal of being a great homage to a very obscure G1 figure. If you're feeling adventurous, and your pocketbook can take the hit, there is a recolor of this set called Beastructor that is made to look like G1 Monstructor. ---Erik TRM * Photos post 2024-01-18 1:04 pm by Unicron.com Time for another dive into the old-school world of Transformers! Let's take a look at the combo that is Ginrai and Godbomber, AKA Power Master Optimus Prime, and the extra trailer we never got in the USA until the 2000s. I'll start off by saying that the figures shown here are a combination of an original G1 toy (complete with yellowing), and the 2002 reissue of Godbomber. Halfway through taking pictures I realized I had the Ginrai's reissue trailer (with chrome), but didn't have the reissue Prime figure! This is what happens when you buy lots of misc collections and forget to fill in gaps. Ginrai (Hi-Q in North America) was the Godmaster (Powermaster) for this version of Convoy and allowed him to turn into Super Ginrai, a combined form of the trailer and main figure. The trailer could open up to hold smaller toys and turned into a battle station. I was always disappointed with the leg flaps in the battle station mode, as they would hang down and I always wondered why there wasn't a basic connector of some sort. This is a mid-run figure and shows where the line started slowing down on detail and the toys became a bit chunky, you'll see this throughout the Powermaster and Targetmaster era. This created sturdy figures, but all had some sort of tight joints. The hips and trailer doors are notoriously tight on this figure and can break if you are not careful. And good luck if you want the Ginrai Godmaster to stay in the chest of Super Ginrai, during this short photo session, he shot off no less than 5 times! Godbomber was sold both separately and in a gift set with Ginrai. His alt mode is an additional trailer that added some extra firepower to the overall convoy mode (I unfortunately am missing his weapons for this example). The robot is formed by taking everything apart and reassembling the toy. Be careful as any kind of movement will turn him into a jumble of parts resembling Ultra Magnus during the 1986 movie. When put together (and not falling apart), this is a pretty cool-looking bot and feels like a standout when compared to other figures from this time. The downside is that his fragility almost completely eliminates any sort of play value for a kid. Godbomber holds one more secret though, and can be taken apart (again) and added to Super Ginrai to create God Ginrai. This mode is pretty good-looking and rather large. Over time these figures saw several releases and repaints and there have even been new versions of these toys like the ones seen in the Legends toyline from 2017. Were these the best toys ever made, no, but they were fun and oozed that 1980s Anime feel that was rarely captured in North America at the time. Today you can find complete G1 Powermaster Primes for a decent price, usually in the $50-$75 range (be aware that Hi-Q can set you back $30 on his own, so look for junk lots where he can be found for much cheaper). Godginrai reissue sets should run around $100-$150. Oddly the most current giftsets of these figures can go for nearly the same as the original G1 issues from Japan! For those expect to pay nearly $250-$300+ ---Erik TRM * Photos post 2024-01-16 2:24 pm by Unicron.com Wow! That was quick! Looks like Legacy United Titan Class Tidalwave is sold out on Hasbro Pulse. I knew that it wouldn't be too long of a wait after the release of Animated Prowl before we would see Optimus Prime and in my personal opinion Hasbro Takara Tomy did a great job. Unlike some of the earlier Legacy releases, this one actually looks alot like the source material really evoking that animated style albeit tempered through a Generations lense. Im loving everything about the robot mode especially the articulation. This figure has double jointed elbows and knees that bend past 90 degrees on a single joint, universal hips and shoulders and great head movement. Conversion from bot to vehicle is fun although it could be a bit tricky the first time with lining everything up just right and learning where everything should go. The vehicle mode is definitely Animated Optimus Primes vehicle mode, they did a great job of recreating the floating type effect of the cab by making use of semi hidden wheels. I really hope that there are plans in the works for a trailer / powermaster armor for Amimated Optimus, it never showed up in the show nor was it ever released in the past as a retail toy however stranger things have been released that many said would never happen. Legacy United Animated Optimus Prime is a great figure in my personal opinion and it has me looking forward to more from the Animated Universe. This figure is available now from various retailers and should be showing up in retail soon if not already. They were in the sights of this formidable Autobot." ---soldiers journal entry. OK, that's not from anything, I just wanted to work in puns on all three names for the mold seen here. Today we look at Machine Wars Sandstorm. A heck of a coll-looking toy and a retool of the late G1 European exclusive Rotostorm (and later re-used for the Universe Whirl). Machine Wars was an extraordinary line in the history of Transformers, shoe-horned between G2 and Beast Wars, it was sold exclusively in Kay-Bee toy stores and consisted of repaints from previous toylines. It consists of only 12 figures in the original release, (there were some later tie-ins from later lines like BotCon). This makes it one of the shortest series in all of Transformers history! Sandstorm looks like he should be plagued by Gold Plastic Syndrome, but is overall safe from this hazard, though we wouldn't advise putting him through a series of tests. His transformation is simple and his body is rather blocky, but an overall solid design. A nice feature is the light piping in his eyes and the transparent rotors look neat as well. If you're a fan of articulation, this isn't your guy...his arms move and that's about it. Overall this mold saw three very limited releases and is often forgotten by Transformers fans, lost in the shuffle of thousands of toys. For myself, I like these late Euro molds, they feel better than some of the late G1 stuff coming from Japan. They far outshined the Micro Masters and Pretenders. I totally forgot I even had this little gem, until I was looking for something to post about today, but after taking him down for pictures, I may just need to hunt down the other two versions of this toy for my collection. ---Erik TRM * Photos post 2024-01-06 10:11 pm by Unicron.com G1 Quickmix is a Targetmaster and comes with two Nebulans: Boomer (blue) and Ricochet (yellow). He turns into a cement mixer, while his Nebulans transform into guns. As a kid I didn't mind his rather blocky feel or simple transformation. I loved how solid this figure felt, and thought he had a very unique looking face. By today's standards, the Nebulon Targetmasters seem cheap, but as a kid in the 1980s it felt good to get more for your money, even if it was something so simple. I have always felt these little guys were under appreciated, especially for all the detail that went into their sculpts. This sub genre of Transformers was pretty short lived, but they were a great addition to the G1 line. ---Erik TRM * Photos post 2024-01-05 9:06 pm by Unicron.com Today we are going to look at one of the harder-to-get GoBots made, Snoop, the SR-71 Blackbird. Snoop was technically never released in North America, even though there was advertising for her in catalogs (both as a single figure and in a 3-Pack). She was, however, released in Europe and of course, she had a Machine Robo counterpart (the series where GoBots came from). Her transformation from Blackbird to Robot involves folding back the front half of the plane, revealing her head. The front half of the engines can be folded forward and extended to become the arms. The wings fold away and down from the body to become the legs, while the wing flaps and tailfins fold forward to become the feet. It's a nice and clever transformation, but due to where the joints are in plane mode, this can cause issues over time. Often, the tail end of the wings can droop and the neck of the plane can sag. Overall she is an incredible figure and shows that Machine Robo molds still hold up to the test of time (don't let that goofy GoBots cartoon ruin these figures for you!). She has seen a little bit of a dip in value over the years, mostly in part due to more of them showing up on the market. Once fetching prices as high as $100, this figure now goes from $30-$60. The figure shown here is an original Machine Robo figure, identifiable by the extra stickers "Danger" and "Rescue" found on the plane; most loose examples may come from the "Robo Machine" and "Machine Men" releases of the toy. This figure (and any SR-71 Blackbird toy) holds a high place in my heart as my father was trained to work on the camera systems found on these planes! He also worked on the PAVE KNIFE system found on F4-R's. ---Erik TRM -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- TFDB on Android | TFDB on iOS | Unicron.com on Facebook for Android & iOS What is TFDB?
