About Sign the petition Your browser does not support Canvas element Sign the petition ANTARCTICA IS A CONTINENT ALWAYS KNOWN FOR ITS WHITE COLOUR ON ALL THE MAPS AROUND THE WORLD. BUT, NOWADAYS, THIS IS DIFFERENT. THE CONTINENT IS ENTIRELY OF MICROPLASTIC. SO, IN PARTNERSHIP WITH GRAHAM BARTRAM, WE UPDATED THE ANTARCTICA FLAG TO REPRESENT THE CONTINENT NOWADAYS, WHICH IS FULL OF MICROPLASTIC. TURN BACK ANTARCTICA WHITE AGAIN, SIGNING THE PLAGUE TO ESTABLISH A STRONG GLOBAL PLASTICS TREATY. Fragmentation of Larger Plastics THE ISSUE Microplastics are pervasive in Antarctica and the Southern Ocean, as confirmed by recent scientific reports. All 13 snow samples from the continent were found to contain these tiny particles. The impact reaches the animal kingdom, with penguins, especially gentoo chicks on King George Island, ingesting microplastics through their diet (Scientific Reports). Plastic production, currently at 400 million tons per year, is expected to double by 2040. Microplastic pollution in the oceans comes from both primary sources like personal care products and laundry fibers, and secondary sources, as larger plastic debris breaks down. This dual origin contributes to the escalating marine microplastic crisis. Microplastics, defined as plastic pieces smaller than 5 millimeters, infiltrate the Southern Ocean through various channels: Microbeads in Personal Care Products
