Performance Patient Access 2021 09 December 21 | Alex McIntosh and Dustin Cragun Due to the ever-increasing complexity of revenue cycle management, organizations have historically had to supplement patient access functionality from their enterprise EMR vendor with third-party revenue cycle vendors. But with the push toward software consolidation, organizations would like their enterprise EMR vendors to further develop patient access capabilities and better meet customers’ growing needs. This report examines the patient access offerings of enterprise EMR vendors † Cerner, Epic, and MEDITECH and shares customers’ perception of how well positioned these vendors are to deliver functionality currently provided by third parties. To view performance data for third-party vendors, click here . † KLAS was unable to interview a sufficient number of Sunrise Financial Manager customers to include data for Allscripts’ patient access offering. What Is Patient Access? For the purposes of this report, patient access functionality includes address verification, cost estimates, coverage discovery, eligibility verification, medical necessity, prior authorizations, propensity to pay, registration QA, and scheduling. KLAS acknowledges this functionality is closely related to other areas like patient experience improvement, patient financial engagement, and patient intake management. To access data about these additional areas, view the relevant market segments on the KLAS website. Performance MEDITECH Implementation Services 2021 28 October 21 | Cathy McCabe, Doug VanWagenen and Kaleb Harris When implementing a MEDITECH EMR, provider organizations must use a firm that is certified by MEDITECH (i.e., READY-certified). There are many READY-certified firms in the market, and MEDITECH has recently joined the competition by offering their own implementation services. To help provider organizations navigate their options, this report seeks to share which firms consistently provide high-quality services and provides an early look at the client experience with MEDITECH’s implementation services. Performance Middle East & Africa EMR 2021 09 September 21 | Everton Santos and Sidney Tate Many healthcare organizations in the Middle East and some in Africa have made EMR purchase decisions over the last five years (2016–2020). In that time, KLAS has validated 86 EMR decisions—72 in the Middle East and 14 in Africa—impacting over 320 hospitals, with decisions made in 2018–2020 impacting (on average) at least twice as many facilities as decisions made in 2016–2017. This report will examine the customer satisfaction, market share, and recent wins and market energy of EMR vendors in the Middle East and Africa. Compared to KLAS’ previous report on EMRs in the Middle East (published in 2019), this study includes performance data on a significantly higher number of vendors, providing more expansive insights, particularly into the Middle East market. Performance MEDITECH Complete Look 2021 08 June 21 | Paul Warburton and Tyson Blauer When making a go-forward enterprise decision, healthcare organizations must take into account how prospective partners deliver across a variety of key technology areas. This MEDITECH Expanse “complete look” provides a high-level analysis of the key IT systems that make up MEDITECH’s enterprise suite. (Other reports in the series do the same for Allscripts, Cerner, and Epic.) This report focuses on the core Expanse suite; data on MEDITECH’s MAGIC, C/S, and 6.x platforms is excluded. Performance Allscripts Complete Look 2021 08 June 21 | Paul Warburton and Tyson Blauer When making a go-forward enterprise decision, healthcare organizations must take into account how prospective partners deliver across a variety of key technology areas. This Allscripts Sunrise “complete look” provides a high-level analysis of the key IT systems that make up Allscripts’ enterprise suite. This Epic “complete look” provides a high-level analysis of the key IT systems that make up Epic’s enterprise suite. (Other reports in the series do the same for Allscripts, Cerner, and MEDITECH). Performance US Hospital Market Share 2021 19 May 21 | Coray Tate and Paul Warburton Despite the COVID-19 pandemic, EMR purchasing was up in 2020, fueled in large part by decisions among large organizations as well as standalone community hospitals. This report investigates the EMR buying trends that prevailed in a year unlike any other. Flash Insights Information Blocking 12 May 21 | Coray Tate and Paul Warburton The final rule from the Office of the National Coordinator for Health Information Technology (ONC) regarding the 21st Century Cures Act went into effect April 5, 2021, and includes new regulations regarding interoperability and information blocking. Just before the rule’s start date, KLAS reached out to provider organizations to understand what they have done to prepare, what the biggest challenges were, and how they think the changes will impact interoperability. Feedback from 42 respondents is explored below. Market Share Global (Non-US) EMR Market Share 2021 04 May 21 | Everton Santos and Jonathan Christensen Despite the COVID-19 pandemic, 2020 was a strong year for EMR purchasing. KLAS validated 158 contracts (135 net new and 23 migrations) impacting 426 hospitals and over 86,000 beds. EMR purchasing in Asia and Latin America was most impacted by the pandemic, while Europe saw the smallest decrease in activity. Overall, purchasing dropped about 30% from the record levels seen in 2019. Market Share Small Community Hospital EMR Best Practices 2021 04 March 21 | Paul Warburton and Tyson Blauer With budget and resource constraints that necessitate strategic investment, it is imperative that small community hospitals (1–200 beds) understand how to drive success with the technologies already in their tool belt, especially their EMR. While EMR vendors are accountable for the quality of their technology and support, satisfaction with the EMR is also strongly influenced by factors within each organization’s control, including setting proper expectations, proactively addressing potential challenges, and empowering internal resources to overcome relationship and product gaps. What are the top EMR challenges faced by small hospitals, and what best practices can help them achieve satisfaction? Note: This report includes only primary, go-forward solutions. Excluded are supported yet not primary solutions such as athenahealth athenaClinicals for Hospitals and Health Systems, Allscripts Paragon, CPSI Centriq Clinicals (Healthland), and legacy MEDITECH solutions. View Awards Show Recordings Performance Canada EMR 2020 08 January 21 | Everton Santos and Jonathan Christensen From 2015–2019, 22 EMR purchase decisions were finalized in Canada, representing 50+ organizations. Many of these decisions—which impacted 175+ inpatient facilities—were group or even provincial decisions made by organizations looking to achieve economies of scale and lower costs by pooling their collective resources. This report—focused mainly on English-speaking regions—is KLAS’ first report solely on Canada’s EMR market. It highlights which vendors are gaining market share and which are best meeting customer needs. Market share data includes contracts signed through December 31, 2019; decisions made in 2020 are excluded. Customer satisfaction insights come from interviews with 37 individuals using go-forward platforms at 28 healthcare organizations. Performance EMR Interoperability 2020 22 December 20 | Coray Tate and Emily Paxman In this update to KLAS’ 2017 interoperability research, KLAS takes a close look at how healthcare organizations perceive their EMR vendors’ efforts to help them achieve meaningful EMR interoperability. While all vendors have room to improve, some have proven more willing to work with other EMR vendors, have been more successful in enabling record exchange that impacts patient care, and have done better at providing and supporting meaningful API connections. Performance Latin America EMR 2020 16 December 20 | Everton Santos and Jonathan Christensen EMR purchasing in Latin America is on the rise, especially among private healthcare groups. The Brazilian EMR market has been active for over a decade, while escalation in other countries in the region is more recent. This report—KLAS’ first focused solely on the Latin American EMR market—seeks to uncover which vendors are gaining market share and which are best meeting customers’ needs. Altogether, market trend data and customer satisfaction feedback was collected from 102 respondents, representing 88 separate organizations in 12 countries and territories. Insights will be examined first for Latin America as a whole, then for Brazil, and then for other countries throughout the region, collectively referred to as Spanish-speaking Latin America (this grouping also includes a small amount of feedback from several Caribbean nations). First Look Kameda Infologics 20 November 20 | Everton Santos and Jonathan Christensen Kameda Infologics—an established EMR/HIS vendor in Japan—is expanding their YASASII platform into the Middle East. This report is KLAS’ first look at the experience of Kameda clients; its goal is to provide early insights into satisfaction among customers outside Japan. Performance Interoperability 2020—Post-Acute and Behavioral Health 12 November 20 | Coray Tate and Jonathan Christensen Since it was established in November 2018, the CommonWell-Carequality connection has been utilized mostly by acute and ambulatory care organizations. More recently, post–acute care (home health, hospice, long-term care) and behavioral health organizations have started to connect to the national networks; the large majority of these early adopters find the connection valuable. This report—KLAS’ first on interoperability in the post–acute care and behavioral health markets—examines which vendors are connected today and the level of usability achieved by their most advanced customers. Perception Post-Acute Care 2020 10 November 20 | Jennifer Hickenlooper and Paul Hess Every health system knows that their long-term success hinges on what happens in the post–acute care and behavioral health settings. As a result, this report examines customer satisfaction with the technology vendors available in these areas and explores which offer the broad, comprehensive portfolios many healthcare organizations seek. Future reports will validate which vendors are being used in an enterprise fashion and how solutions are being used to enable referral management and care transitions. Performance Implementation Leadership 2020 13 October 20 | Jennifer Hickenlooper and Kaleb Harris When healthcare organizations implement new IT solutions or upgrade existing ones, they want implementation partners who can help them successfully navigate the change and hit the ground running. To find out which services firms are most consistent in delivering implementation success, KLAS interviewed organizations that have recently used a firm for implementation leadership (i.e., consultants and project leadership were provided, either overall or at the project management level). Their insights can help your organization decide which implementation partner is right for you. Performance Legacy Data Archiving 2020 16 July 20 | Jennifer Hickenlooper and Ryan Oliver When healthcare organizations purchase new software systems, consolidate existing products, or acquire other facilities, they are often left with legacy software solutions that need to be retired. Shuttering these systems and archiving the data is an opportunity to reduce costs while maintaining access to historical patient data. Organizations that have gone through this process recommend considering the following when choosing a data archiving partner: Project Size & Complexity: Which vendors have completed projects similar to yours in terms of the number of hospitals/clinics involved, the number/type of applications being archived, etc.? Extraction & Implementation: Late projects extend the amount of time legacy systems must be maintained and paid for. Which vendors set proper expectations and consistently hit timelines? Customer Satisfaction: What does customer satisfaction with system functionality and ongoing support look like post-implementation? Performance Smart Pump/EMR Interoperability 2020 09 July 20 | Jackson Tate and Paul Warburton For the first time, adoption of bidirectional smart pump/EMR interoperability is high enough that KLAS can examine customer satisfaction—at least among BD and ICU Medical users on the pump side and Cerner and Epic customers on the EMR side. How well do these four vendors support their customers’ pump/EMR interoperability efforts? Are specific vendor combinations more likely to achieve success? In addition, this report examines what progress (if any) other pump and EMR vendors have made with interoperability development and adoption. Performance Go-Live Support Segment Highlight 2020 21 May 20 | Kaleb Harris and Rebecca Hammond Provider organizations looking for go-live support have many experienced, knowledgeable firms to choose from, but how can they differentiate the good firms from the exceptional ones and ensure their engagement goes as smoothly as possible? Based on the feedback of current clients, this report examines overarching trends in the go-live support market and highlights each firm’s individual strengths and weaknesses. Performance Behavioral Health EMR 2020 07 April 20 | Jennifer Hickenlooper and Tyson Blauer Organizations using behavioral health EMRs report some of the lowest satisfaction scores of any market segment KLAS rates. While there is still broad need for improvement across vendors, the last year has seen significant shifts—some vendors have stepped up and improved their delivery, while others have seen significant drops in customer satisfaction. What factors are driving these changes? Performance Consulting for Cerner 2019 26 September 19 | Alex McIntosh, Jennifer Hickenlooper and Ryan Oliver Organizations using Cerner’s EMR and revenue cycle software are increasingly looking for help from consulting firms to implement and optimize this software. These organizations almost universally consider Cerner’s in-house services, but those who engage Cerner for implementation or IT advisory services tend to be dissatisfied in much higher numbers than those who opt to use a third party. This report aims to help organizations find the best fit by diving into Cerner’s and other firms’ depth and breadth of experience, strategic expertise, and dedication to client success. Performance Global (Non-US) EMR Implementations 2019 12 September 19 | Everton Santos and Jonathan Christensen Given the intense nature of an EMR implementation, it is natural that most projects will experience at least a few unexpected hurdles. In fact, about 30% of healthcare organizations outside the US report going over budget and 40% report vendor-missed timelines. However, feedback from recent implementations † shows that some vendors are much more likely to help their clients stay on budget, on time, and within scope. Which vendors make the list? † Data for this report was collected from organizations outside the US who contracted for an EMR between January 2016 and August 2018 and who are either currently implementing their solution or have already done so. Feedback was also collected from some organizations who have an ongoing implementation that started prior to January 2016. Decision Insights Acute Care EMR Decision Insights 2019 01 August 19 | Coray Tate, Doug Tolley and Sam Eaquinto A seamless patient record across the healthcare organization has become a universal expectation. Having integrated acute care and ambulatory records is the most-often-cited reason for a hospital of any size to look at a new EMR system. EMR systems without proven integration are rarely considered and even more rarely selected. Buyers know what is possible from an EMR, and most are now unwilling to settle for less. Cerner, Epic, and MEDITECH are most likely to be considered for large hospitals (500+ beds) and midsize hospitals (201–500 beds). The competition for hospitals with fewer than 200 beds is much more crowded, with MEDITECH Expanse, athenahealth, Allscripts (both Sunrise™ and Paragon), CPSI, eClinicalWorks, and MEDHOST battling alongside Cerner CommunityWorks and Epic Community Connect. Performance Emerging Acute Care EMRs 2019 04 June 19 | Coray Tate, Jonathan Christensen, Paul Warburton and Tyson Blauer In recent years, athenahealth, eClinicalWorks, Epic, and MEDITECH have all released new acute care EMR platforms. Small and midsize organizations express high interest in these solutions, but adoption and development vary widely, and only athenahealth and MEDITECH currently have live customers. This report provides a snapshot of each solution’s current state and examines how well athenahealth and MEDITECH—the top-performing solutions in the 1–200 bed market—are meeting the needs of various departments and user groups. Note: Information about more longstanding acute care EMR platforms not covered in this research can be found on the KLAS website .
