ArchPlan offers clients a comprehensive approach to design in a profession which
often has become fragmented by narrow fields of expertise. Beginning with the
needs of the stakeholders and integrating the big picture of all disciplines
involved we offer integrated and holistic design and problem solving services
from programming and feasibility to code analysis, construction documents,
detailing and specifications to post construction evaluation. By offering urban
design, planning and architecture not as separate entities but complementary
fields we bring about creative, environmentally sensitive, cost effective and
realistic “win-win” solutions. 



TRANSPORTATION

Klaus Philipsen, the president of ArchPlan Inc., has 35 years of experience with
transportation planning and transit facility design. In his capacity as Borough
Council he helped introduce the concept of traffic calming to his native
Stuttgart in the early eighties, and worked with the Stuttgart Transit Authority
on transforming the legacy streetcar into a modern light rail system.

RESIDENTIAL DESIGN

Throughout it’s nearly twenty year history ArchPlan maintained services for
homeowners for new homes and mostly for rehabilitation and additions including
renovations using historic preservation tax credits for homeowners. More than on
any other project type, the home is where the quality of ArchPlan’s service and
attention to detail matters because the client is the investor and the user.

PLANNING

Klaus Philipsen received his German diploma in architecture with a minor in
planning and urban design. ArchPlan’s name stems from the desire of re-uniting
the fields of architecture and planning in a comprehensive and integrated
approach that combines the detailed knowledge of buildings with the bigger
picture of place-making, urban design and master-planning.

INTERIOR & EXTERIOR DESIGN

ArchPlan has stayed away from narrow specialization and has a wide range of
competency in various types of buildings in many different approaches including
new construction, rehabilitation, adaptive re-use and historic preservation.
Although ArchPlan’s biggest portfolio is in multifamily housing (affordable and
market rate rental and condominiums), the firm is competent in retail,
institutional, industrial, educational and transit buildings. We do not try to
create an iconic style that “brands” our buildings but try to find the best
solution for the clients’ needs and the in which a building is placed. We
believe that buildings can only be successful if they work for the owner and
user and are respectful of the surrounding community or natural setting.
