If we laugh and sing a little as we fight the good fight of freedom, it makes it all go easier. I will not allow my life's light to be determined by the darkness around me.—Sojourner Truth, American abolitionist and women's rights activist With its official codification in 1987, Women’s History Month celebrates the often overlooked historical contributions of women in the United States. Some of the most notable women getting their time in the spotlight include Sacajawea, Sojourner Truth, Abigail Adams, Rosa Parks, Susan B. Anthony, and many, many more. Each year, the National Women’s History Alliance designates a theme for Women’s History Month. For 2024, they’ve chosen “Women Who Advocate for Equity, Diversity and Inclusion” saying, “The theme recognizes women throughout the country who understand that, for a positive future, we need to eliminate bias and discrimination entirely from our lives and institutions.” Watch: Presented by Good Morning America, enjoy this brief history of Women’s History Month, courtesy of ABC news correspondent, Juju Chang. Beyond reminding us of how powerful women are, Women’s History Month, as Kay Boatner writes for National Geographic, “continues the discussion of women and their contributions . . . by encouraging the study of achievements by women year-round.” SHOW WHAT YOU KNOW According to the video, in what year was International Women’s Day first celebrated?
