LOOKING INTO THE GROUND

ORCaSa goes a step further and considers not only agricultural soils but also
forests, pastures, wetlands, and public spaces in urban areas. In that way, the
chances to capture and store carbon are maximised.

FORESTS

Along with the oceans, forests are one of the world’s major carbon sinks. They
are above and below ground, but their very existence is threatened by human
activities.

CITIES

Around the globe, cities are sprouting up and expanding, but often without
regard for the health of the soil that forms the basis for healthy green spaces
in these urbanised areas.

WETLANDS

Wetlands provide a refuge for a variety of animals and free ecosystem services
such as water purification and carbon sequestration, nonetheless they are often
overlooked, or worse, drained.

AGRICULTURAL LAND

Considered the foundation of our food system, many modern agricultural practices
disrupt the delicate nutrient balance needed to maintain healthy soils for
agricultural lands.

TO GROW KNOWLEDGE AND DIALOGUE ON THE EARTH’S SOILS

The International Research Consortium (IRC) that emerged in November 2023 from
the ORCaSa project is advancing carbon solutions through research funding,
harmonisation of research activities and knowledge sharing. We are looking for
universities and research organisations, national and international initiatives
or programmes, national and international R&D agencies, development agencies,
foundations, policymakers, private companies and NGOs working with environmental
and sustainability topics… to become an active member or donor.
