Zack Sharf Oct 9, 2020 12:35 pm @zsharf * * * * * * Share This Article * Reddit * LinkedIn * WhatsApp * Email * Print * Talk Zack Snyder’s 2009 adaptation of Alan Moore’s “Watchmen” ©Warner Bros./courtesy Everett Collection “Watchmen” creator Alan Moore shared his belief in 2017 that superhero movies’ impact on popular culture was “tremendously embarrassing,” and the comic book icon remains just as critical of Marvel and DC films three years later. In a new interview with Deadline to tout his feature film “The Show,” Moore says he remains retired from writing comic books in part because “most people equate comics with superhero movies now.” “I haven’t seen a superhero movie since the first Tim Burton ‘Batman’ film. They have blighted cinema, and also blighted culture to a degree,” Moore said. “Several years ago I said I thought it was a really worrying sign, that hundreds of thousands of adults were queuing up to see characters that were created 50 years ago to entertain 12-year-old boys. That seemed to speak to some kind of longing to escape from the complexities of the modern world, and go back to a nostalgic, remembered childhood. That seemed dangerous, it was infantilizing the population.” RELATED * Andrew Garfield, Tobey Maguire, Tom Holland Recreate Viral Spidey Meme as 'No Way Home' Sets Home Release * Benedict Cumberbatch Says He Doubted 'No Way Home' Success: Everyone Was Drinking 'the Kool-Aid' RELATED * 'Cowboy Bebop': Everything You Need to Know About the Live-Action Netflix Adaptation * 'House of the Dragon': Everything You Need to Know About HBO's Upcoming Series Moore believes there is a connection between the enduring popularity of superhero movies and current political events, saying, “This may be entirely coincidence but in 2016 when the American people elected [Trump] and the UK voted to leave the European Union, six of the top 12 highest grossing films were superhero movies. Not to say that one causes the other but I think they’re both symptoms of the same thing — a denial of reality and an urge for simplistic and sensational solutions.” When asked by Deadline if he has any interest in watching contemporary superhero films, Moore responded, “Oh christ no I don’t watch any of them. All of these characters have been stolen from their original creators, all of them. They have a long line of ghosts standing behind them…I have no interest in superheroes, they were a thing that was invented in the late 1930s for children, and they are perfectly good as children’s entertainment. But if you try to make them for the adult world then I think it becomes kind of grotesque.” Moore’s “The Show,” directed by Mitch Jenkins and starring “The Souvenir” breakout Tom Burke, is being launched in hopes of jumpstarting a new film and/or television IP for the writer. The feature exists in the same world as several short films Moore scripted, and the writer already mapped out three to five seasons worth of episodes for a TV continuation of “The Show.” The film was set for a SXSW premiere in March but will now debut at the Spanish genre festival Sitges this month. COMMENTS NATE November 4, 2020 4:01 pm Dissappointing the the creator does not appreciat his work and influence on what he deems juvenile, Watchmen,V amd Miricleman were 3 of the most influential series written and (2) of the 3 have been made into movies with varying sucsess but not a note of satisfaction from its creator. He finds ir easier to diminish other peoples work than have a moment of appreciation for what they attempt to achieve, Sad Reply wolf face October 10, 2020 3:27 pm I think comic book movies are going to be the end of cookbooks and rightfully so. There is no point if chinos at all. Poeple should live their lives instead of taking stories about other people’s lives. Reply MOrda October 10, 2020 11:02 am TTHANK YOU ALAN. You nailed it perfectly. Reply MuscleG October 10, 2020 10:58 am Oh man the comic book babies are out for Alans blood. Grow up. Get out of your parents basements The movies truly suck. Reply Lucius October 10, 2020 1:14 am He’s entitled to his opinion and should be left at that. He doesn’t speak for me and all those that enjoy some great fun movies. It’s fiction. There’s different types of fiction for everyone. Getting all psychoanalytic over comics is a waste of energy. Personally I enjoy seeing the comics I read as a 12 year old boy jump onto the big screen. With today’s technology it makes those comics seem real. But that’s it. I have a full time job and family that preoccupies the majority of my time. But when there’s an Avengers or Justice League opening, I’ll be going to the theaters. I marvel (no pun intended) at the GGI, etc, enjoy the popcorn, drive home talking about it with my kids and the next day I go back doing other things in my life. So Mr. Moore and Mr. Coppola, thank you for your contributions but stay in your box and don’t tell me how to live and enjoy my life. Looking forward to Aquaman 2… Reply Billy October 9, 2020 9:51 pm It’s unfortunate that Moore claims to believe that comic books are for children, considering the fact that he made his mark in creating The Watchmen, perhaps the one of the first Graphic Novels to be taken seriously in the comic book art form. Without Alan Moore and Watchmen, it could be said that the medium might not have reached the same level of legitimacy that it received afterwards. Typical of Moore to believe in an alternate version of history, where he has no hand in laying the ground work for where we are now. I will always respect his talent, but in Moore’s mind, he will always be the victim, and never share any responsibility for the results of his own work. Reply Rob October 9, 2020 4:57 pm Oh, so he’s a psychologist now? He spewed nothing but word soup. They are movies, calm down dumb dumb Reply Tandy McBean October 9, 2020 3:02 pm What a complete joke of a man. Imagine thinking superhero movies are even remotely connected to Trump or Brexit. And he has the audacity to accuse anyone of being infantalized while spewing such juvenile fallacies? Reply Mooby21 October 9, 2020 2:43 pm So glad someone is speaking out about the infantilism of comic book movies. They also happen to be all the same movie . Be gone Locusts of devolution. Reply Brandon October 9, 2020 1:11 pm Hasn’t seen any since Batman Returns and he thinks he understands the landscape? LMAO! Reply CANCEL REPLY Your email address will not be published.
