After three Grammy awards, dozens of number-one songs, six world tours, and 100
million records sold, Gloria Estefan has earned the right to brag a little.

What’s surprising is that she doesn’t.

In an interview with Forbes, she said that celebrity isn’t what drives her; what
does is the opportunity to do what she loves. This might sound like false
modesty, but she’s proven it time and again.

For instance, she doesn’t do many press conferences. Instead, she responds to
DMs from her fans on social media. She turned down a performance on one of the
world’s biggest stages—the Super Bowl—for time to relax after the holiday rush.
And she hosts an intimate talk show with her daughter and niece on Facebook.

But if she doesn’t have an eye towards celebrity, she is thinking about her
legacy. She wants to be remembered for her kindness, her ability to include
people, and the real connections she’s made with her fans, friends, and family.

Estefan’s perspective may be informed by a tour bus accident in 1990 that nearly
left her paralyzed. Her husband convinced her to visit a Sony executive who
could help her career. She didn’t want to go but took the trip to please him.

She fell asleep on the bus—and woke up in the hospital. The doctor said her
prognosis wasn’t good, but that her recovery would be up to her. After five
months, she was able to dress herself again.

Watch: Whether or not she’s playing every stage, Estefan has a major place in
Latin music. In this interview with ABC News, she discusses her impact and the
doors she opened along the way.
