Ann Rule is regarded by many as the foremost true crime writer in America, and
the author responsible for the genre as it exists today. She came to her career
with a solid background in law enforcement and the criminal justice system.
As a child, Ann spent her summer vacations with her grandparents in Stanton,
Michigan, helping her grandmother prepare meals for the prisoners in the jail.
She wondered why such friendly, normal appearing, men were locked behind bars,
and why the sweet woman in the cell upstairs (who taught Ann to crochet) was
about to go on trial for murder. That was the beginning of her lifelong
curiosity about the "Whys" behind criminal behavior.
Following in the footsteps of her grandfather, a sheriff in Michigan, Ann joined
the Seattle Police Department when she was 21, worked a year and a half, but
couldn’t pass the eye test. After five years of rejection slips, she finally
sold her first article for $35! Soon, she found her niche when she began writing
for fact-detective magazines like TRUE DETECTIVE.
Ann was a full-time true crime writer from 1969 - 2015. Over the past 30 years,
she has published 33 books and 1400 articles, mostly on criminal cases. Ann has
a BA from the University of Washington in Creative Writing, with minors in
Psychology, Criminology and Penology. She has completed courses in Crime Scene
Investigation, Police Administration, Crime Scene Photography and Arrest,
Search, and Seizure, earning her an Associates Degree from Highline Community
College.
Ann not only attended several police seminars on organized crime, arson, bomb
search, and DNA, but taught her own seminars to law enforcement groups, and was
a certified instructor in many states on subjects such as: Serial Murder,
Sadistic Sociopaths, Women Who Kill, and High Profile Offenders. She was a
member of the U.S. Justice Department Task Force that set up the Violent
Criminal Apprehension Program (VI-CAP), and testified twice before Senate
Judiciary Sub-committees on victims' rights and on the danger of serial killers.
Ann's books deal with three areas: the victims' stories; the detectives and
prosecutors and how they solve their cases with old fashioned police work and
modern forensic science; and the killers’ lives. Ann spent months researching
for her books, investigating the killers' early childhood, and even back into
their family histories to find some of the genesis of their behavior.
Eight of Ann's books have been made into TV movies, and five more are in the
works. She won the coveted Peabody Award for the miniseries based on her
book,Small Sacrifices, and has two Anthony Awards from Bouchercon, the mystery
fans' organization. She has been nominated three times for Edgar Awards from the
Mystery Writers of America. She was also awarded the Washington State Governor's
Award. Ann is active in support groups for victims of violent crimes and their
families, in programs to help battered and abused women, and support groups for
children caught in traumatic living situations.
Ann Rule passed away in July of 2015.

…went into showing details of this most despicable person who proved over and
over his lack of humanity toward every other person who came in contact with
him. I was nauseous during so much of the time reading of his utterly horrific
nature and what others had to put up with as he lied and conned his way through
relationships. Bravo Ann Rule for taking on this "project" and seeming to
include all it's evil bits. Brad Cunningham truly is right where he belongs (and
probably still up to his conning ways).

This is the spine-chilling true story of sociopath Brad Cunningham, a man who
hated women and viewed his children, especially his sons, as possessions. When
his fourth wife, accomplished attorney Cheryl Keeton, fought him bitterly for
custody of their three young sons, Brad won--by bludgeoning Cheryl to death and
sending her car out onto a heavily-travelled highway to make it look like she
was killed in an auto accident.
Interesting to read this book with the passage of time since the crime occurred
(1986) and the years leading up to the crime. Thankfully we as a society are far
more aware of the issue of spousal abuse and the warning signs, as Brad was a
classic abusive spouse long before he committed murder, not just to Cheryl but
to all the other women who had the misfortune to fall in love with the handsome
charmer, especially his first wife Loni Ann. There were no battered women's
shelters for Loni Ann to run to when Brad beat her or left her, drunk, in the
pitch black inches from a cliff hoping she'd fall to her death. Today, although
domestic violence is still far too common, we know the warning signs of an
abusive personality and how to get help.
The reason Ann Rule is the best living true-crime writer is how she draws you
into the tangled web of the lives of the very real people whose lives were
touched by murder, not just the police and courtroom drama. Dead By Sunset is
one of her true masterpieces.
I read this book when it was first published and lost it in a basement flood, so
I purchased the kindle version to re-read. Very disappointing that the kindle
version does not have the photographs that were in the paperback.

Ann Rule has a winner with this book. She starts the book with a mystery. A
stalled car on a busy freeway that is in a lane of traffic. A man stops his car
on the opposite side of the freeway and hops over the wall to help. He sets
flares and then tries to get inside the van to help the driver and discovers a
blood bath. From there Rule takes readers on a journey into madness of what
husbands can do behind closed doors. A very good read!

This is the best Ann Rule true crime I have read, perhaps together with "The
Stranger beside Me".
Love makes blind, but it's still hard to believe how several beautiful,
intelligent and successful women let themselves be manipulated by the charming,
charismatic and above all deadly dangerous Brad Cunningham. Handsome and
articulate he is using his women emotionally and economically. Some of them
manage to escape, but still continue to live in fright. The mother of two of his
children is, however, not that lucky...
Cunningham is a misogynistic sociopath, but his complete disregard for the law
and lack of feelings for other people is still astonishing. The way he uses his
children is particularly heartbreaking. I went back and looked at the pictures
of "loving" father Brad with his children again and again, mesmerized by the
idyllic relationship they were supposed to be showing.
A chilling and completely unputdownable read from the master of true crime!
