EMPOWERING COMMUNITIES TO BECOME AGENTS OF CHANGE.

STRENGTHENING AND EXPANDING SYSTEMS OF SUPPORT.

Our Vision

Comprised of educators, activists, parents, and local leaders, the OSO
Initiative aims to support Chicago schools by empowering and developing the
human assets and resources surrounding educational institutions.

WHAT WE OFFER

 * Transformative Curriculum Design

   To support education efforts for immigrant children, the curriculum targets
   English language proficiency, social and emotional competencies,
   cross-cultural navigation, and native language development.

 * Professional Development

   Development efforts tend to prioritize educational testing and
   accountability, but its essential to remember that teaching is a relational
   profession. With a bicultural or cultural straddler model at the forefront,
   leaders will learn pedagogical frameworks for global, culturally relevant
   instruction, and family and partner activation and engagement.

 * Summer & Afterschool Programs

   The cornerstone of our student centered curriculum is an asset based
   community design framework that nourishes a sense of belonging and bicultural
   identity. Program extends to include mentorship and academic support
   throughout the year.

WHY THIS WORK IS SO IMPORTANT…

THE CHICAGO HUMANITARIAN CRISIS

Over 36,000 people are now in Chicago seeking asylum.

They're in the center of a humanitarian crisis and political tit-for-tat; a
federal problem that will continue to volley between the city and Texas in 2024,
costing Chicago and Illinois millions of dollars with human welfare at stake.

THE FUTURE OF AMERICA

With the Pew Research Center projecting that, by 2050, more than one-third of
the nation’s schoolchildren ‘younger than 17 will either be immigrants
themselves or the children of at least one parent who is an immigrant,’
Associate Professor Natasha Kumar Warikoo says that schools will need to rethink
classroom strategies, family engagement practices, and how to best navigate
cultural divides.

THE ECONOMIC REALITY FOR CHILDREN IN IMMIGRANT FAMILIES

In 2021: 27% of kids in immigrant families were living in low-income
working households compared to 18% of kids in U.S.-born families.

THE REALITY OF U.S. SCHOOLS PREPAREDNESS

A significant increase in the number of immigrant children in U.S. schools over
the last decade has challenged K-12 educators to expand their capacity to serve
students who may arrive with limited education, little to no English
proficiency, and trauma. However, school systems tend to focus on immigrant
background students through the lens of their English proficiency level, and
data on immigrant students as a distinct group have historically been limited in
scope and accessibility. As a result, decision-makers may fail to target
resources to the unique needs of recent arrivals.

THE KNOWLEDGE GAP OF ESL LEARNERS

Nationwide, 90% of fourth graders who are English language learners score
below proficient in reading. By comparison: 64% of their English-fluent
classmates do not achieve reading proficiency in 2022.

THE UNIQUE CHALLENGES FACED BY IMMIGRANT CHILDREN

Recent immigrant students in U.S. schools are at once a highly diverse
population and one disproportionately likely to face challenges due to living in
low-income households, having parents with limited formal education and English
proficiency, and experiencing stress related to migration and immigration
status. It is critical for school staff to understand students’ backgrounds,
especially as migration trends shift, to provide appropriate resources and
support for their linguistic, academic, and socioemotional growth.
